I am quite i superstitious person and i was just wondering about sharing what superstitions any of you folki have. Here is a few i know
If a bumble bee enter's your home it means that a stranger will visit you. If the bottom of your feet start to itch this means that you are going to walk on strange ground. If you have mixed coloured flowers in the house it can mean someone is going to go to hospital, also we never have lillies in the house this can represent death, never put a comb on a table means sickness, and the colour green means parting of a relationship, crossed knives means there will be a row, bird pecks the window there will be a death, never wash out blankets in the month of May means you are going to wash someone out of the family, gap between one's teeth means their a lucky person, hope you find these interesting there are many more but i won't bore you with them all at one time.

Here are a few more i have been thinking of

If you give someone a handbag/purse you must put a penny inside it or else it means a parting
If you give someone something with a point to it e.g.(brooch) means a parting
If you give someone gloves, scarf and shoes as a gift you need to give them a penny aswell as this also means a parting
Never cross on the stairs with someone
Never do washing on New Years Day, Ash Wednesday or Good Friday this means bad luck
If a flock of birds fly over your head then make a wish
If a bird (mutters) on you it is said to be good luck
If someone has died in the family and their body is laid over a Sunday it is said that another member of the family will follow
Ornaments of elephants are said to be unlucky indoors unless their trunk faces the door -way
Never have a peacock feather indoors this is very unlucky (infact we won't have anything of peacocks or owls indoors)
If a picture falls off the wall indoors this is a bad omen(usally a hearing of a death)
Told you that i was really superstitious i expect you wonder if i ever dare go outside the front door

I think all superstitions are Victoria .. just that we believe some of them! I can't even walk under a ladder and have had to do mission impossible's to avoid walking under one befor now .. I know its stupid but I always tell myself 'just in case' |

Hi all. In the Indian Culture we have a few superstitions too. Never put a shoe up side down it brings bad luck to the family, also a married woman should not wash her hair on a Tuesday or Thursday as it will bring bad luck to her brother/brother's . I was told this years ago by my grandmother. How true it is who know's. Its an old lady's tale i believe that comes from back home in India. |

Hi all, Most superstitions became sometimes from facts, that, from over the years have been kind of romanced into some kind of witchy craft or ol wives tales. superstitions are more of a short way to teach younger children or/ and warnings, ie.. walking under a ladder may bring bad luck.. this is because as the person is walking under the ladder something may be dropped accidently from the person who is working up that ladder and hit the person walking under it. it is also fact that (eek sorry to mention the word) 'long tail' to have one walk over you (especially if over your bed as you sleep) they tend to mark their route by sent dropping, this may cause illnesses and probable death from it doing so, It became a more listened to superstition for Roms due to living in benders etc, Hence "it is bad luck to even mention one let alone to be in contact with one. The "it is lucky if a bird mtters on ya head" this comes more from 'sea men and sea gulls, if one should mutter on you then it means you are not far from land, theirfor meaning you are lucky to be home safe and well. Well that is an explination just just a few, I dont wish to bor you by going on n on. Kushty Bok to all another common superstition was about lighting a ciggy with the third light. 1 person strikes the match, = 1st light, then lights his/her ciggy = 2nd light, then holds out the match to light his/her friends ciggy. This superstition came from war times, 1st light (strike) = enemey see's it, 2nd light, enemy takes aim on it, 3rd light, enemy shoots. person on the 3rd light is now gone, so it was truly unlucky for him to take the 3rd light. So you see, superstitions do exsist and usually has a good reasons however this does not mean everyone should avoid nor ignore, they mainly are there to give warnings. |

i have relitives who won't go out on friday 13th. some wont even get out of bed.
my lot say if a black cat crosses your path its unlucky, and that all white cats are.
you'v not to put a comb on the table, i don't remeber why. When i was little my aunt taught me about a hundred. but i was told it was nonesence and i am now a Christian, so i have forgot most of them. most of them are just silly. like you can't bring home your child till its churched, its not in the Bible so it must be a superstition. |

May the peace of the LORD be with you always. God Bless |

Hi ya all, long time no rokker, how are you all?
Here's a few family superstitions - probably ones you already know:
The giving of silver (primarily silver coins) on weddings and christenings. When the champagne or what have you have been popped, the cork is cut in a X and a silver coin from the well wisher is wedged in it - this is supposed to give good luck to the couple or child for the future and to ward off any bad luck.
When going to new home a horseshoe is placed above the lintel of the door for good luck and to ward off bad luck - protection again.
Heather, lavender and Rosemary tied in a bunch is placed above the window on the lintel to protect and keep the home safe - my grandma swore by this one - told me the heather was for love, the lavender for peace and the rosemary was for protection - She also used to have all three planted right by the front and back door for the same reason!
Shoes and bags are never left on tables - very bad luck.
Spilt salt should be thrown over the shoulder to ward off bad luck.
Broke mirrors bring 7 years bad luck.
Saying "God Bless you" when someone sneezes so they don't get ill.
Lighting a candle and keeping it burning for 3 days in front of a mirror in rememberance of a newly departed loved one - i was told this is too keep the darkness of death out and reflect the light of life into the home - don't know how right or true that is.
Magpies - when seen brings 1 for joy, 2 for sorrow, 3 for a girl, 4 for a boy etc.
Well. i'm all out - sorry to go on! lol!
All the best, Shahnee x

| The one with not putting a comb on the table means if you do it's a sign of sickness. Mixed coloured flowers in your house can mean someone in the family will end up in hospital. Don't do any washing on New Years Day i think it means your wash a family member out of the family also the same applies on Ash Wednesday. Don'r cross on the stairs with another person sign of back luck. If a bird pecks your window it's a sign on death. If a wag tail bird walks in your path it's a sign of a warning. Never give the colour green to someone it's a sign of parting and gree in colour can be unlucky (e.g. clothing or decor in the home). Never give a bag without putting a penny inside it it's bad luck for the person who is receiving it. Just a few i remembered again. |

| superstitions is part of our Roma/Gypsy life, although through out these years, I mean after more then 5 decades, it has changed, at least in my clan the Lovara, but still it has quiet an influence in our daily lives, I thing that the schools of gadge had a lot to do with it, and also, high educated younger people are like scientist that don't believe in nothing supernatural, in my family for instance, it is very hard for me to convince some of my sons or daughters, some superstition that uptill today, I conserve, specialy in dreams, or what my older people told me, for instance that when a dog bigins to cry out like a wolf, and did not do that before, well I believe that some one in the clan of mine will die, because my eldest told me that the dog has a sence that pridicts this death! of course that dog must be yours, or your fellow Gypsy, there are many more superstitions to be told, I have stated some of them in my book recently published in the U.S. it is called{ {The power of life Magic |

Dear John, I do not want to convince any one to believe or not in superstition, but as far as our Gypsies are concerned, it is a diffrent story superstition is very high on our agenda, some even eczeggurate, but personaly I believe in superstition, not because of my age, but what has been told to me through out my life, I respect the stories of my elders that now they are gone for ever, as i said in the book {the Magic power of life} one should always protect himself when in a dream you see someting that makes you scared,or you might think, that it bad, spill it out to some one,and i am sure it will not come true Victor. |
