my mom is a stanley and i think they came by way of canada...but in dayton ohio there is a cemetary where my mom and dad's people are buried. no one uses it anymore that i know of but for a great many romanys in america that is where we traceour ancestors some tell the name of the town in england where they were born and yes there are buckland and joles along with the names i gave. i am what is called in america southern romanychal i guess cause we live in the south...lol...but as far as i know i am not related to any northern romanys except the wells. stanley and harrison is a very common name but i have yet to find anything linking us..but i am sure if i can find a way to trace back to the old country it will all come to light..i thank all of you very much.
p.s. the reason i mentioned going thru canada is because many chored across the border so there is no official record.

what was interesting was how he was saying. . .(quote) "But to be honest, there are no real Romany left today. My mother was not allowed to wash the women’s clothes with the men’s; where you made your food, you were not allowed to dry your clothes. These were some of the old traditions. But today the young Romany have forgotten our traditions, our culture, our language, in their struggle to survive." . . . . . we was talking about this type of thing on here!! ..it seems Gipsies every were are loosing there old ways? i think its sad''..but something Gipsies every were have in common.. |

Rading that has also made me think that some of those trible traits are here within the gypsys of today. If I think about it I know of other familys and my own and I can see the some of those traditions, even if watered down with time and inter-marriage. I can identify some of those traditions and ideals within people Gypsy/ travellers that I have met. They're not as lost as we think, Its just that we're mixing with people whos traditions are not the same as ours more now. its not very long ago that a young man would only marry a young woman from certain group of families. Marrying the wrong/different family wasn't allowed. |

me dad had a pakistani friend in a garage and he told me dad that his words were from a certain part of india? . iv talked with indians and they thought i spoke funny rummness but i always said well so do you lol.. . .i always wonder how gypsy from all over the world will always speak around the same amount of rummness..and they say that they loose a lot of words but most Gipsies from other countries remember the same words? . like beng, danyas, bal., mass, and so on? ..i wonder is there any Gipsies in Europe that pronounce words like they still do in india?.. . bang |

Hi Bang : ) With many Anglo-Roms we change an 'a' to an 'o'. i.e Yog (Yag), pog (Pag), yok (yak), gorja (gaje), lolo (lalo), kom (kam), bori (bari), Pobble (Pabai), kosh (kasht), Bok (baxt), posh (pash). The older grandparents didn't all use the 'o', as can be seen in the Welsh dialect which would've been what was spoken in England. Panjabi words are; ag (fire), ak (eye) aka (eyes), Pen (sister), anda (in), Pra (brother), kala (black m), Kali (black f), lal (Red). So much is the same. |
