| hi. stumbled on this site tonite :-) can anyone help. iv always been brought up knowing my mothers family were romani from southern ireland. my mums grandad came over to england when the potato famine happened. he came with 13 children (they had 14 but one died as a young child). they came over and settled in manchester where the boys (grandad and brothers) dealt in scrap metal. one uncle never settled in brick house and took to the road all his life (mums uncle). mums grandad was married to brydie. mum tells me tales of her grandma brydie she says is true romani. brydie was a wise lady who told fortunes and saw things and people folks didnt normally see. this is a gift that has gone down generations through the women. mum was born with this gift and at 70 she still does readings and even theatre shows. she sees folk that have passed on and comforts people with her readings. me and my sisters all have this gift to some extent and my daughter 17years has it very strong with her nan now helping teach her to make the gift stronger. i would love to know more of my grandma brydies gypsy heritage. mums dads name is byrne but im also told could be o'byrne in the past. mum was born in swinton, manchester in 1937 so her dad was well before that. can anyone help? mum has told me so much of the stories of her grandfather and grandma brydies gypsy life and heritage before they settled in england after escaping ireland due to the potato famine. mums dad is alfred (im sure...must ask her....lol). mum looks ur typical romani...she says like her dad and grandad...black straight she says wiry hair (lol) and her round large gold hoops she says her grandma always wore. does anyone know anything of her dads gypsy family? sorry iv gone on so long. thank u so much xxx |

| LOL... ps. even though i was born and brought up in houses...i am the only one of my mums 5 children she says has the strongest wandering spirit. i have for the first time in my many years stayed in the same house for now the second year running.....lol. i have always moved home every year ...sometimes 2 or 3 times in a year!! mum always laughs shaking her head and says to me...u have ur grandmas romani blood strongest in u.. u never settle to live in one place! u know..i try to fight it but it only takes a few months and then i want to move again. many a time i get in my car, take my dog and drive out just so i can get out the house. its a standing joke in our family that when my daughter leaves to uni next year and my boy follows, i will get a caravan and hit the road....my wandering spirit will take over me!! i cant wait .... :-) x |

Hi, firstly good luck with your search. My mam`s family were Brynes, similar description to yours, my aunt Francis did try looking into the history but found no records, typical. They were settled in Dublin by the time me Mam was born but originally Granny said they came from teh country. Dont know if this helps but I think we could be connected. Just a hunch plus Bryne is a name I dont hear very often.:) |

' Settled in Dublin, but came from the country.' ? County Leitrim ;) Be sure to keep a wide open mind on the spelling, 'mind. Look out for BYRNES, BYRNE, BEIRNS, O'B..... etc. But I have good reason to strongly suspect ye'll find it's a Leitrim name. Same as Sullivan is instantly recognisable as a Cork name, see? And so on. If either of ye turn out to still be around on here, just pop a word onto this Thread or e mail me through my Profile, to remind me. I'll make some enguiries for ye. In fact, now I come to think of it; My good mate, Tommy Beirnes, has family in england! |
