According to the Ancestry website the origin of my maiden name of Doe is France, apparently from a region of the Charente called Eu (as in "d'Eu", of Eu as it were).
Any comments fellow Doe people?

I have done some research of my own and it seems the Ancestry website have it a bit wrong.
Yes, the place Eu does exist in France but its not in Charente, instead its just outside Dieppe in Upper Normandy in what looks like a suburb of the town itself now. And I am in Normandy now, so yes I have come home without even being aware of it! |

Hi DOE,
With reference to our name. I thought that is was French and meant 'Of the water' as the French for water is Eau.

It can also mean D'Eu which translates as "from Eu".
The site of Eu is on the outskirts of Dieppe which is not far from the Channel port and rivers which I guess makes it appropriate on both counts. Either way, we Doe's appear to be of French descent. Oddly enough I saw a little old gentleman here riding his bike down the lanes last summer who was the absolute spitting-image of my Grandad. Weird eh? |

Yes I made it to France, have been here three months and I am loving it. :D I guess I am an hour or maybe two from Dieppe as well so I really have returned to my roots - literally!! |

| Thankyou Mike. I am enjoying country life here with fresh air and peace, for me it is truly wonderful. I also know that this is precisely what my Grandad would have loved, with fields, flowers, horses & cows surrounding our beautiful old farmhouse - he would be very happy for me that I have achieved it. I am totally at home now and I won't be back! :D |

Hello Mike,
I've been to Oz twice now. Yes its a wonderful place. It was a toss-up between emigrating to Perth or coming here but we visited Normandie, saw this house and the decision was made, all done and dusted in seconds! There were greater forces were at work on the day we came here, I like to think there was an unseen hand guiding us to this hamlet as it was a strange collection of circumstances, a cancelled appoinment, then meeting THE most odious estate agent in the world that guided us to a small backstreet agency in a very rural town where lay photos of our old house in all her neglect. We knew she was destined for us as soon as we got out of the car, it was a step of fate really. We have no regrets whatsoever.

Hi Moya,
hope all is well with you and you are still enjoying life in France. We are off to Germany this week and then to Ozz early next year. It must be the "Gipsy in my Soul" that is causing all this wandering. This will be the third time to Oz and the umpteenth time to Germany, all visits to family.
