Hello there im also traceing my Family of McDonald but its a bit of a needle in a haystack! My ggg Denis McDonald left Scotland around 1800 and boarded a ship(not sure if he was in Navy?) he arrived or left ship in Newlyn in Cornwall he married a Mary (Dimsey) Forester in 1809,we beleave he may of been a traveler/Gypsy especially after reading Robert Dawsons Romany in the family my Dads traced the family back to around 1891 and found they were tin workers/colliers etc then my Dads gg grandfather left for Canada so we have no info at all after this apart from when my grandfather was here during ww2.we have been down to Newlyn but cant find any info on Denis McDonald and was wondering if you know how i can find out any info on the McDonald gypsy family and maybe that they had a Denis in the family?Any info you could suggest would be much appreciated Yours Thankfully Duncan McDonald

Hi Duncan, at the moment I have'nt come across a Denis Mcdonald in my Family tree. However thats not to say there isnt a connection. Dennis could be related to my Mcdonalds in some way or another, Its not impossible for him to be a Brother, Cousin etc.. I've been using Scotlands people website to find BDMs etc. Was it your ggg who went to canada or your gg?. I think Ancestry.co.uk has BDM's and census's but you'll have to pay. Familysearch.org can be usefull, that contains information added by other researchers. You can search for family member's individually and if you use the advance search you can put what country(canada), their mother/fathers names, year of birth etc so you can narrow your search down, plus its free. A little Tip I come accross about name spelling. Don't disgard different spellings of a surname, ie , If you find a Denis Macdonald don't automatically assume that its not your dennis. Back then people often got the spelling of surnames wrong, especially with Mcdonald/Macdonald, White/Whyte and so on. Here is my email address if you could send me more info about your Mcdonald family i can look closer to see if theres a match. I could then send you info on my Mcdonalds. I would be interested in the Robert Dawson material! Does it give you info about specific famillies and members?
I have been on Rootschat.com and the members have been really helpfull. Ancestry.co.uk has a members section, I have left posts about the family members that iam looking for. Ancestry aid.co.uk is also another good website.

I Hope this information helps.
Hope to hear back form you
