Hullo, Romany. Welcome aboard

Well, ye've really caught my eye with this one. Stanley, of course being associated with the New Forest. Scarrott is more from round Chichester. Small wonder then they they're both in Portsmouth.

Now then, I can't see ye post as I write this. 1924, wasn't it? How certain are ye of how close that is, please?

Any idea what county they married in? Hampshire or Sussex would seem most likely. But any confirmation or further clues could cut down the work time.

And, speaking of work time; I haven't got a lot of it to spare. And my connection's a joke ~ only I'm not laughing! But, like I say; This one's caught my eye and I fancy a scratch around on it. Add any more details ye can and, if no one else blasts in with broadband and clears it up for ye? I'll see what I can do

Here's ye Grandad, Romany. Sorry it's such a scruffy picture, and I hope it doesn't size such that it blows the forums doors off. Only I need it big enough that ye can read it. If it doesn't pan out, PM me and I'll e mail ye a bigger shot. I can't preview this post either, so I don't know what's going to happen now, as I hit Send Two year old son of a Peg Maker, living in a tent! Couldn't make this stuff up, could ye? I'll dig some more later. Bit rushed right now. I'm enjoying this http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n201/ptpc/Stanley1901-1.jpg

Romany; I've hit pay dirt here! It was a Triple marriage! Three Stanleys married three Scarrats (They spell it that way on the records). Same day and place ~ Keynsham.

Get me a Hotmail or what ever to send this stuff to and I can give ye all the details. Names, dates. I can also tell ye how to buy the Certificates, and they'll tell ye a whole lot more.

This is brilliant! There's just no telling how much more can be dug out on this one.

I'm off to get on with my own business now. I believe this site will e mail me, if ye send me that PM? If so, I'll drop what I'm doing and get back to ye with the information. Maybe you could then relay it to here, so others can benefit from the records? Only my PC's in melt down and I can barely function with it.

I am posting this on behalf of a new Member Alison ,can anyone help her with nay information on her family.

Hello to every one. I am trying to find out any information about my grandfather. Leonard arthur stanley. I know he was born in Stramshaw Hants and his parents were caroline and James Stanley, decended from James Broadway Stanley. What I would like to find out is, have I got living relatives. My mother never knew her father and has always thought she was an only child with no other family. She would really love to hear from her farthers side. I know my Grandfather is dead> I am pretty sure he died in Portsmouth in 1965 as a retired scrap metal merchant. My mother has never seen a picture of her father. She was told he was very tall with black hair. I know I am not romany and I do not live your life but my grandfather is a part of me and so are his family by blood. Many thanks for those that read this.

Thank you and stay well .Alison

Moddie / Alison; I originated in Pompey and encountered the (Romany) Stanley's, in passing. This was the brothers. Decent enough bunch of lads. Any surviving would be about pushing their sixties now, of course. I've no idea how many are still with us, nor even exactly how many there were in the first place.

Eldest though was Jimmy Stanley (RIP).  No idea, off hand, what his fathers name was. Could've been Len? I'll try to find out, next week, when my sister resurfaces. She knew them well.

Stamshaw sounds right too. I heard something about another of the brothers, connected with Stamshaw. Jimmy has at least a surviving son too. Extremely personable young man, from what I ever saw of him. He's probably still in Portsmouth.

Sadly, I know for a fact that Jimmy and one other of the brothers are no longer with us. I can just add though that they were all characterised by their black hair, brown eyes and darker complexions. Picture book Romany's. Either way, if ye looking for 'The Stanley's' of Portsmouth? Yeppers. Few Stanley's there. But only the one family need concern us here.

Ditch,  Many thanks for responding to my post and thank you moderator for putting it the best place.  Its brilliant to hear from someone that knew some of the family, even better when they were known to be personable.  From what you say I think my mothers brothers are probably dead.  She is 70 herself.
At the time of marriage to my grandmother, Leonard was working as a stoker in the merchant navy, seeing as this would have been early war time I expect lots of men were doing jobs they had never done before. Prior to that he was a horse dealer. My mother was also told that her fathers family were also boxers?  One other memorable fact my mother remembers is that her father was over six foot five.  Could have been a small childs memory wanting her father to seem larger than life so to speak.  Once again thank you both so much for taking the time to help me.

Aha! Alison, ye back. Ok. Let me just skin a fag up here ..... I've dug my way back to the Yahoo IMS chat I had with my sister, since we last posted. I'll sift through it and see what I can add to the above.

Yeppers. My sister spent plenty of time in Mr and Mrs Stanley's home. We know where that was. It was in Buckland. Par for the course. Not there any more. 'Redeveloped'. Thus, I suspect, they'd have been moved to the place I had in mind for them. Round the corner in the, then, new places.

She also thinks she remembers Mrs Stanley's first name. (Sorry, but we're talking like forty years ago here. None of us getting any younger either).

Damn! She says it's all on the head stones! I'm so sorry. If I was still living in Portsmouth, I'd be out there tomorrow and find all ye needed to know in a day. I feel so impotent in these situations. The mobile I brought with me died. I lost all my numbers with it. Now I've lost touch with 99% of the people I ever knew. Just nothing I can do about that.

Anyway, yeppers. Just read through the whole transcript of my chat with Sis'. There were Five brothers, that she knew of. I get the impression she'd have heard if there were any more. She was very much a part of their social group.

Listen; I'm wary of talking about living people on an open forum like this. I can tell ye some few more, sparse, details in private.

I believe Moddie has my personal e mail addy? (I'll send her right now, anyway). She can give that to ye and I'll tell ye the nitty gritty couple more things I know. Now ye've reminded me, I'll also ask my 'kid' brother about the Stanley he once came across. I'd almost swear this guy was Leonard. Certainly an 'older generation' Stanley, either way. Bit of a character too!
