Hi JBerritt, came accross your post this week while searching some family info on google. I spoke to my great uncle John Berritt & our families are related. I'm the great grandaughter of Elizabeth Berritt, who's mother was Elizabeth Jefford & her brother was Jimmy Jefford the boxer. My uncle also confirmed that his uncle & aunt are Ruth & Albert. He also knows the Killingback family. I'll be able to give you a lot more info. Regards, Marie.

Hello, my name is John Berritt,My dad's name is Henry Berritt and His Dad was Albert Berritt, I don't think they are the same people you are after but I think somewhere along the line we are related.
My Dad always said we were romany but none of us ever believed him until I saw this post while searching for something else.
My dad was born in Tottenham as were myself and my two brothers, My Dad's Mum's name was Ruth Stevens.
My Dad always took us to the big Rec's fairs when we were kids.
I hope this is some help to you.

Hi John, looks as though we are all related. As I said I came accross the post by JBerritt by accident & haven't had a response..it was written a few years back. I will check with my nan but I'm pretty sure that your Grandad Albert was my Great great Grandad's brother, he was John Berritt married to Elizabeth Jefford. They were all Romany, the census shows that they all lived together on a site. My Great nan (also Elizabeth Berritt, which would be your Grandad Albert's niece) was born in a romany caravan. They also used to work the racecourses telling fortunes etc.. Nice to hear from you, Marie

There are also some Berritts I came accross that are in Kent, they are the sons/grandchildren of Sonny Berritt, he was another brother of John Berritt & Albert Berritt. Just thought I'd let you know.. it gets confusing because everyone has the same names!!

Hi John,

Yes of course.. I think I may have made up a family tree so will check it when I get home & let you know.. I'm a bit further down the line to the Berritts than you though but I can get the info from my nan & her uncle John Berritt who would be your Grandad's nephew..

If your on facebook you can add me, let me know & I'll give you my sirname.

Right, here it goes...Albert Berritt (your Grandad) his father was Henry Berritt married to Rachel Thomas. His siblings were Henry, John (my Great Great Grandad), Stanley, Ted, Jim, Betsy, Priscy & Lydia. They all lived in a yard owned by Henry & Rachel in caravans in Braemar Road, Tottenham. Apparently they used to charge travellers to stay there. My Nan has a pic of Henry & Rachel & their marriage certificate here which is your Great Nan & Grandad & a census of all the people living in the yard. I'm Marie Dalton, I'm 22, daughter of Karen Perry, daughter of Teresa Eden, daughter of Elizabeth Berritt, daughter of John Berritt your Grandad Albert's brother. My great nan Elizabeth Berritt was the eldest of 6 girls and a boy, she died a few years back at 95. 4 of the girls have children and have pretty large families so there's quite a lot of us & we all know eachother. The Berritts I came accross in Kent are the children & Grandchildren of 'Sonny' Berritt, we think that Sonny was a nickname for Henry berritt - waiting to clarify this. Hope that helps a bit - probably confused you..

Sonny was a brother of my Dad's, I am in contact with a few Berritt's on facebook,if you add me we can chat on there,John Berritt. I was speaking to one of my second cousins and he told me his Grandad told him the same stories as my Dad told us, I had traced the name back to scandinavia, from there we went to the USA, a couple of Berritt's fought in the civil war, from the States I traced it back to Ireland and from there to England so I assumed thats where we came from but from what my Dad told me that doesn't seem to be the case. I will speak to my Dad tomorrow (He,my Mum and my Brothers are in Clacton now, I am in Kent) and i will speak to him about what you have told me,hopefully the next time we speak I wil have some information for you.

The confusion with Sonny is that my nan's uncle John thought he had an Uncle Sonny which would be a brother of your Grandad Albert but we can't find any details of him..so we think it's a nickname for Henry as according to my nan's aunt they used to call her Grandad Henry (The one married to Rachel Thomas) Sonny. Your uncle Sonny then is the brother of your dad Henry which makes you the closely related cousins of Andrew & Will Berritt in Kent..is this right? I couldn't find you on facebook.. Try & find me it's Marie Dalton (Marie Spinks) in Wickford Essex, picture is of my horse.

Ok I have found out the following,My Dad's Dad had the following Kids,Henry Berritt (my Dad),Albert Berritt,Sonny (Barney) Berritt,Johnny Berritt,Tommy Berritt,Kathy Berritt (my Dad's twin),Molly Berritt and Rachel Berritt. Sonny (Will and Andrew's Great Gdad)had two boys Lawrence and Albert. My Dad said Lydia Berritt married Jimmy Jefford (The fair ground boxer). My Dad said he knew your Great Nan Betsy (thats what my Dad said they called her)really well and he had heard of the name Eden before. He also confirmed the place in Braemar Road as he used to go there as a kid. He also confirmed taking us to meet some of the family when the fair was in Lordship Rec (the big rec). Is there any chance you could put any pictures you have up on facebook and next time I go to Clacton I will bring back some of my Dad's, scan them into my PC then upload them to Facebook.

Whatever pics of the family you have, old ones if possible. I think my Dad said something about Tom Eden,I remember because he said he died young, I will get more out of him the next time I go down there, he isn't all that well and doesn't really like chatting on the phone but he was very interested in this. If you look on my Facebook page you will see I have other Berritt's as well, Tasha, Natalie and Josh are my kids, My brother Gary has his kids on here as well, as does Tony, I have Brian Berritt's wife (Brian is the son of Kathy my Dad's twin), I am sure once they know who you are they will be more than happy to add you. Its so nice to Meet you Marie, for years I used to think there weren't many of us about anymore but it shows you how wrong I was.
