| Hi, Not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree but I've been doing family history for the past few years and with my paternal line things were pretty straight-forward, however my maternal line is proving to be a different thing entirely.
My mothers family hailed from Donegal where her mothers family had roots in the village she grew up in for generations. However her father, who we always thought came from another town in Donegal, appears to be a different case entirely.
My maternal gran, Mary Lally, came from the town of Moville on the east coast of Donegal she met her husband o be my grandad Matthew Lally in early 1920. Matthew who was a travelling salesman who worked for drapers selling garments, robes and cloth to the Roman Catholic Church all over Ireland and travelled widely doing so. His home town was Ballyshannon on the west coast of the county, but we had very little information about the extended family. However it wasn't until I stated looking into the family history that I realised just how confusing the whole story was.
His family appears to have lived here for less than a few years and all links seem to direct me to County Mayo, but here is were the story ends as I can find no mention of him or his fathers or mothers names (Patrick Lally wife Catherine nee Wren).
As I say I was completely at a loss until someone suggested that it might be possible that they were travellers which might explain the inability to trace them.
Can anyone tell me if this sounds like a possibility as I am lost at where to go?
Many thanks. |

| I've spoke with some of my mum & a few of my aunt's and they have said that they would doubt that he was a traveller as this would have been the talk of the town if he was.
However I still have a feeling he was as from things that i have read anyone who worked in everyday type occupations kept their heritage secret feering it would hurt their business.
Would this make sense?
Thx
