Re your helping hands. My family name is DOE sometimes DOW or DOWE . I am at present looking for family members from the 1725 era especially a Francis(Franes) Doe who married somebody called Ann??. He was a traveller in the East Clandon area of Surrey.

I hope to help anyone researching the Midland Romanies - I have already made a website about my own research, including the Heron and Boss pedigrees, a fair bit about the Grays (as they are my own line) a few Smiths, Elliotts, Loveridges etc - theres all sorts here.

I could not enter your website by the address you gave, So went to Yahoo, Geocities site to find your website, I found your website by entering “gypsy” into their Members Page Directory and it came up with about 60-80 entries for Gypsy in their names and found your site there.
You have a great site, Loads of information; You have certainly done a lot of work on your family history and Pedigree.

I was wondering if any-one has any reliable information about the Heron''s and Taylors beeing of the same people.
My grandad told me wheni asked him about when the romani's had name changes due to the war and other officials and authorities of the time, He told me that The Herons where taylors and that they had changed there name before the great war. Do any of you know any of this. and are there any others. I know of another Price family who took on the name price but he never told me what there names where before as they are people i know well and may be he just didnt want to say at that time. but this might help me whan i am looking for relitives pre 1890. thank you. |

| I know very little about my paternal grandfather. He was Joseph Christopher Noel Doe, born Christmas Day (when else!) in a stable in about 1894ish to Anneselina Doe who gave the honour of naming him to the Lady of the House. He was the eldest son, followed by Cornelius (Naylor), Brittania, John and Violet. Could have been more - I just don't know. The family has broken up now, don't know the whereabouts of any of my Dad's cousins although they are out there somewhere. My family are in Surrey where Grandad settled down, built a house and married the love of his life, my Grandma Marie-Louise a non-Romany. None of the above Doe's seem to bear relevence to the scant amount I know - can anyone fill in the gaps? |

Yes I have traced this already, the family following onwards to Pyrford campin Surrey which is not too far from where my family are now, however the Anneselina here mentioned went on to have a family but the names of her children did not correspond to the names of my Grandad's brothers and sisters. I was contacted by a lady who was descended from this branch who told me that it is quite possible that my Annselina came from outside the group(my dad seems to think the name Ayres comes into it somewhere) but had her children by Joseph a member of this family. I just don't know anything for certain. My Grandad never spoke of his childhood - maybe it was too painful for him to recall - so details have been lost through the mists of time. I remember Annselina though. She died in about 1964 at a great age, still wielding a rod of iron over the family! We called her Granny Crockett as she always wore a Davy Crockett hat, winter and summer, plus she still cooked on an open fire in the garden even though she had a proper kitchen in her house. I know her DOB was 1st May - same as me as I was her "Special Gift" so she said. I just wanted to find my heritage really, for my children's sake if nothing else, but there are so many glaring holes in the tale that maybe I never will discover where my roots came from, except for a few old tales from my Dad and personal memories. |
