Hi there. I thought I'd join in this topic cos I live on a boat with my family !
We call ourselves boaties, rather than bargees. A barge is a wide boat, not a narrow boat. Noone calls themselves a bargee unless they've got a big barge. There have always been barges in England but they tended to be on rivers and estuaries, and wouldn't fit down most canals, tho' there are exceptions.
There's definitely similarities in life and living between boat and vardo, especially on the old working boats with the small back cabins, which were about the same size as a vardo. The rest of the boat was of course a hold filled with cargo. Now there's not so much cargo, and the cabin's a lot bigger !

he he i lived on one when i was a teenager.it was on the river avon in saltfod nr.bath.what fun it was going through the locks and things but i wasnt over fussy in those days and it wouldnt do for me now adays.i like my lovely chalet!!!!!but there are numerous barge folk around stratford on avon moors loads and here in bridgwater we have a fair few.my barge was on the avon but most are kept on the old canels that have been reopened.they are very colourful and the folk take as much pride in keeping them up to scratch as we do of our living vans.not a speack of dust and all highly polished and often a dear little jack russel to run behind or infront of the barge!its great to talk to the folk.i have traced quite a few barge gypsies lines down here from bridgwater up country.whether they were roms or not i dont know but some married into the romany lock family i do know that.intersting subject!!!!

Hi

In answer to the original question; here is a quote from 'The English Gypsy Caravan-C.H.Ward and Denis E Harvey'

"Both narrow boat and caravan are the homes of travelling people and are characteristicly decorated; both were horse drawn, the inmates of each swarthy lovers of bright colour. We ourselves thought they might have a common denominator in the towns of the great horse fairs early in the last century"

Im glad I found this topic here because I have been wondering the same thing. My great great grandfather lived on a boat/barge in the Kent area and Im trying to find out more about his family. His sir name was Lukes, I know there are famous and less famous gypsy names, would this sir name ring a bell with anyone, incidently?

Sincerely
Ivan

Further more, would it still be possible to travel the canal's of England in a horse drawn barge? Or are the canal sides no longer conducive to horses???

Hello Ivan, No In fact its illegal. The main problem is other boats moored up alongside the canal towpath. The montgomery canal still has a horse drawn barge but Its a landlocked canal.British waterways have put up too many "safety" barriers to stop motorbikes too!

Thankyou Jon

Thats a shame they are illegal. Still good to know there are a couple of places you can still use them.
I think the human population needs reducing so that old ways can still exist. Too many cars on the roads, too many motor bikes on the canals...lol
