| Hey so when I was in the Uk on holiday with my family this guy stopped to talk to me. I was outside having a smoke, getting ready to go find a club, I might have been holding my rosary or something (it was a very stressful trip), and this really good looking guy stops to chat with me and starts asking me if I'm gypsy, which I was really surprised by. Up until that point I'd never heard of the Pavee, though I suppose that might make sense now if I was because I always wondered how full blooded irish relatives of ours died in the holocaust because they were traveling through Berlin. Maybe I'm not sure, I had thought they were the part of the family that were connected to the old money from Ireland, but maybe not. ANYWAY. So I was like no I'm kind of white to be gypsy, I mean I tan really well because I'm like 1/8-1/4 native but I'm certainly not dark enough to be romani. Anyway he laughed and explained the Pavee. He was good looking so I tried to follow him. I told him how my ancestors had been given a huge title of land in Ireland because my matrilineal ancestor was the daughter of one of the last high kings, and some of my other ancestors that married into that line were bridle smiths for nobles, so I supposed it made sense that a Pavee woman might have been married into the family to allow the gypsies to settle on our land as they travel through but I really didn't know.
Anyway he was really nice, and invited me to go to a party with them, and then said there would be a bunch of good looking girls there. My hopes were dashed, and I was befuddled because he was dressed super well, even compared to most gay guys. My response being "actually if you could tell where the closest gay bar is I'd appreciate it" his turn to look surprised "oh you're gay" "yeah, you're not" "oh no, why did you think I was?" "Well yeah" "Oh really how come" "you're dressed really well, you're hairs nicely done, you've got on clean, ironed and pressed clothes, you smell nice and you're in a good outfit (I think I went on to say something about most straight dressing is ugly wrinkled torn and dirty sweat pants when they leave the house)"
Anyway to make a long story short, he had told me that Pavee are catholic (I do remember part of our discussion was are you gypsy, no my family is like super uber catholic my family would flip over anything to do with spirits and channeling. I still don't get why there's a million books on gypsy spells.) Anyway so he was really nice and totally cool that I was gay, pointed me the way to a gay bar, and I tried to ask him about how well the pavee accept the gays in their community and that's when his friends showed up to go to the party. Anyway so now I've been super curious for like two years, what is it like to be gay in the gypsy community? |

oh and I meant follow what he was saying not physically follow him, I was really shocked how friendly he was trying to get me to come with them. Its hard to explain but my grandmother came from an entirely gaelic speaking community in Detroit, its one thing to be friendly and talk to people (my grandmother doesn't talk to hardly anyone), its another to invite a perfect stranger to party with you for the night. I might have gone if I didn't feel like I'd be out of place being likely the only gay guy there, not to mention a settled person in a traveler event. |

Dear Lumas, I don't know how to answer you about this gay business, frankly I don't have anything against it, but I am sure you know very well how most of the Gypsies see on a gay. in my clan we call it is a sickness, that unfortinately is badly looked upon, we do not discriminize, but on the other hand, we avoid to have contact with such people, as a Chatolic, it is a sin to be gay, but today things are very diffrent, my people not as a whole, are afried of such people not to get infected, as I said we consider it a sickness, no more nor less! please do not get angry, but the truth has to be told. this includs most Gypsies, oh yes we have our gays, but very few open up his or hers secret, so how many they are we don't know, anyway if you are happy this way, who am I to tell you not to be a gay, you asked about our Roma/Gypsies, how they execept gays well this is your answer! |
