Hello my name is Katie and I am half gypsy. I was looking for a site like this to get in touch with some gypsies that are in my position. I am the very first person in my family to ever go to school and attend college. I am 22 years old and working on a bachelor of science in Biology and minoring in chemistry. I live in Colorado and I would like to talk to anyone who is interested. Almost all of my family does not understand why I am going to school and they don't understand why it is so important to me to do well. Most of my family live in California but my mother ran away at age 17 and moved to colorado. My immediate family is very supportive of me going to school but thats about it. I love school and I love learning and no I'm not a geek I just know how important it is to have a good education. Im not going to be another gypsy fortune teller. Anyways I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you!

My great grandmother Ann Jones was romany from Wales. She was the grand-daughter of Alabaina Wood who was the grand-daughter of Abram Wood. Hard to find on the census of course, partly due to her being romany, and partly because of the number of Ann Jones on the census in Wales!!! I only know her father's name was Richard and no details of any siblings (if any) The Wood family are well known in north Wales, but little information on her side. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Been reading the forums today....interesting ;o) Pikey is a word that I have only heard "down south" but it always seems to be used in a derogatory way. My great grandmothers family were always referred to as gypsy or romany, of course those words could be said as a derogatory way too. It's generally not the word that is important, it's the sentiment behind it.
On researching my family history, a few people have said that I should hide the fact that my great grandmother was romany!!!!! Let me say as a "gaji" I will never hide the fact....I'm proud of it.

my dear Katie, I am so glad to have you on Journey Folki, to me you are an example to all of the Gypsies/Roma, around the world, this letter of yours is like music to my ears, you have done well my dear,to do what you think is right! and I can assure you that you are right, I don't have to be a fortune teller, to say that your life ahead will be a sea of roses, with your education the whole wide world is open to you, I just cannot find the words to tell you how proud I am of you, Katie, when the other Gypsy/Roma will see your sucsses, they even might follow suit, and that is my dream to see all my people educated, children and even adults, who never seen the insde of a scholl, I thank you for writing this artical, may God bless you and who ever you love! your best found friend, Victor

Hi Katie, I think that is fantasic that you are getting an education! That is part of the reason why my fam settled as they wanted a better life for their children and their children's, Children. E.g. better health care and education. Well that and they were kinda forced out of the New Forest from what I have learned.

There is nothing 'geeky' about wanting a good education and to do well in life. I am also studying for my Bs(hons)in Psychology and Social Sciences. I left home when I was only 17 with not many qualifications then married at 18, but now I have the letters dip. psch. cert. soc sci after my name, own my own home, have a beautiful family and have a career.

I wish you the best of luck my darling in all your endeavours, may the lady luck shine down upon you and your fam.
