Hi all,

Have been talking with Lyz on another thread and she suggested I start another thread to ask this question.

If I buy a piece of woodland - can I put a caravan on their and live there - provided it is a moveable caravan (and I don't get caught...;-))

What are the laws covering this - what about planning permission??

So many questions!! Thanks all...

Jane

Hi chester , i think you want what everyone wants , a piece of their own kingdom lol

Im not up on the law on this ,i can only tell you what goes in my neck of the wood

a family of Irish travlers bought a bit of land and moved on they made a nice job of cleaning it and its well looked after, but they didnt ask for planning permission, and as far as i know its still going before the courts as to wether they can stay or not .

Others have been evicted off there own land, which doesnt make sense when councils have been told to provid a certain number of places for travlers to stop .

As far as going unnoticed in a wood , i carnt see that happening .

im sure if you google your questions you will find your answers,

Id say go the legal way about it , if you cant stop on it you can sell it.

good luck in what you do

Hi,

Thanks for your reply - pretty much what I thought really. Its not that I want a piece of my own kingdom, just want to live for more than working to pay my bills, which means a more simple life away from bricks and mortar!!

I will continue my research on google and will probably be back with more questions later.

Thanks,

Jane

morning jane, my wife and i live in house but own a bit of agriculrul land about 4 mins from house, we have had it for about 13 years or so, we keep chickens have fruit trees shared acses always keep it tidy, got on well with neighbers let them park car on land and burn rubbish, ok so far, then put caravan on for grandchildren and us to make pot of tea and shelter, mentioned to neighber whos house is 2 hundred yards away, that i was going back yto my roots as my grt gran was travellewr,. 4 days later council enforsment man on doorstep, havnt got planning permision, put in retrospective planning permision 260 pound and waited 2 months later turned down said we were useing it for pleasure, neighbers said we atracted wrong sort( still dont know who they ment) we could have apealed but to be honest knew we would lose, we didnt even want to live in it, we then put planning in for agricutrul store large shed and got tempry 3 years then must aply again, take my word for it, peoplewho you thought were friends will turn on you, and the council will dig their heals in, and rember SOMEONE will shop you, sorry to be so gloomy but do your homework first and save yourself some heart ache, saying all that i wish you the very best of luck setaside

Thank you all for your comments - we have so much in this country - freedom of speech, anti discrimination laws, civil rights.... yet still things like this happen.

Amazing - anyway thank you for the insight and I will certainly do my homework.

Cheers,

Jane

hello everyone

excuse me butting in this conversation but iv heard from quite a few that buying land is no problem.................the problem is the councils in most areas

once land is bought your only allowed to live on the land a certain length of time without water, sewerage, gas & electric in a vardo or any other type of mobile home..............but from what iv been told you have to get planning permission before you can even add these & most councils refuse planning permission to any traveller Rom or Gypsy

but hopefully the area your wanting to settle in will be more acceptant it sounds lovely wish you all the best

Hi Shaz, we had to get planning to put a couple of mobile homes on the farm, if they have electric and running water you need permission, also even if you just want them for storage, you still need planning permission, no one can see them, but the law is law!! Lyz

hi Lyz

i agree the law is law

but it also seems the laws can & are changed to suit

years ago (i was only bout 9) some of my folki decided to settle, my uncle & aunt along with uncles parents bought some land in rossington (nr doncaster)
they parked their vardos up then built walls & double gate round the land...............just after they done this the gavvers pulled up with the then local council saying they had to move from the land........my uncle showed them papers showing the land was theirs

they did go on to build 2 houses & had all the plumbing wiring etc done.........but shortly after the councils changed the rules, so that anyone buying land had to have planning permission to build (which i know applies to everyone) but if they know its a traveller of any kind buying land they nearly always refuse planning permission..........main reason given is because there are no amenities for which you also need permission for.............& if you apply for permission for amenities they are refused too............reason given because there are no buildings

so its a catch 22 situation & just goes to show there is one law for the gorga & another law for us
