| I was wondering whether you could help?
i am looking into the history of my family, with rumours flying here, there and everywhere, but one of these rumours was of romany gypsy ancestors. I didnt think much of this until i came across my great great grandfather ''Percy William Rose'' and the only certificates i have of his are after 1911, but are only of his daughter he just appears on them so the only details i have, are the ones he has written himself on the certificates (e.g his daughters birth certificate) however the problem is before 1908 there is no records of him at all! he is on the 1911 census as head of the household with a wife but all the records before do not contain any information of him, there are no birth certificates, no marrage certificate, no baptism details and no death certificate, the only details we know are that after 1908 he was always living in a pub or an inn. so could this be possible gypsy? hence the no records? or could he have been a gypsy and under an extreme situation change his full name to ''percy william rose''? im sorry that this message seems abit all over the place, just this has completly confused me and thrown me.
Many thanks
and kind regards

Hi That would be fantastic! :) Basically what we know is this: He was born in 1876 in faversham Kent to William rose (who was deceased in 1904) He marries 'Bertha Harrop' in southwark, London in 1904............ Percy Rose- coachman and Bertha Harrop- School teacher His first daughter 'Ivy Rose' is born in the 'white horse' Roffey, Horsham in 1908 where Percy was a 'beer house keeper' His first son appears on only the 1911 census, 'George Rose' born 1910, Roffey, Horsham..... but nobody has heard of him before! :/ In the 1911 census they were living at 216 Crawley Road, Roffey, Horsham. and percy was a publican. and bertha was an assist in buisness. In 1931 Percy and Ivy where together and were living and working in the 'punchbowl Inn, Dorking'. This being the address at which Ivy was living when she got married in 1931.... There may be a possibility aswell, that Percy also got married in 1931. Percy died on the 18th april 1931, where he was living in 'red cottages, Dorking'. He was Buried in Dorking cemetery. We have no Records of him between his birth year (1876) until 1911, besides his marriage in London, and his birth certificate in faversham Kent. We have recently been told that percy's daughter Ivy had told my uncle that either her grandparents or her great grandparents where gypsies but we have a feeling that he may also be a gypsy himself. Any information will be helpful, and will most certainly be appreciated. Many thanks Kind regards RBHussey. |
