Hello,
My name is rachel and I work for a company called equality north east. We are an equal oppornuties organisation who are working to removing barriers to work through the promotion of equality and diversity. I teach in communites and workplaces all over the north and many people want to discuss gypsies and travellers as we cover steroetyping and discrimination and as you know many gypsies are steroetyped in society.
The thing is people ask me questions that i can't answer like - what is the difference between gypsy and traveller? do gypsies/travellers work/want to work and if so what barriers are faced.
I am not really sure of the answer as it is not something i have knowledge in, nor do I kno anyone who does.
I hope anyone can help me
Thank you
Rachel X

hi rachel..
i'll try and answer one of your questions for you,
..
speaking as a Gypsy . yes we do work, and work very very hard',... we will work 6 days a week if things need it that way!!..
Gypsies are very proud of working hard!!
both Gypsy men work and women, if they can! ,
iv no doubt theirs some poor Gypsies that sign on the dole..but i was raised to think it was a shameful thing to sign the dole!..and its allso shamfull for a Gypsy man or woman to be lazy..
..
.
...so in short yes we work..
..
.. hope this answers your stereotypes that you have heard ..it just a shame theres people that say we dont work .. and are just being rotten minded people..
..
.all the best |

Hi Rachelb.
Gypsy is a term that refers to the Roms / Romanichel / Rommany that have been in the country since the late 1400s to early 1500s. They origin from India and travelled into Europe via Turkey as a result of Muslim or Mongrol expansion. Gypsy is a term that means Egyptian as due to eastern ways and features, this the land that the Roms were mistakenly thought to be from. Other Rommany groups are the Sinte / Manush of Germany and France and the Gitano of Iberia. Rommany have a language that is mostly of Indian. Travellers are all those that travel. Many other types of families have taken to the road for various reasons such as showpeople, circus people, those looking for work etc. These people are not of an Indian origin but have often picked up many attitudes and words from the Roms. It is very hard now to tell the difference and in addition to this, since the turn of the 1900,s,
there has been intermarrying between the different traveller types due to being forced to live alongside each other on council sites. Hope this helps |

Well known old Rommany surnames are Smith, Lee, Boswell, Marshall, Jones, Wood, Cooper, Lovel, Herne, which are all names which were taken upon arrival into the British Isles. A famous Rom is Billy Marshall who is the reason that Brits give silver at Christenings. It is recorded that Billy gave some silver spoons to the King at the child of the Kings's Christening. The Roms until the mid 1900's were hard workers and usually worked on farms where they delt in horses, controlled rodent problems, or worked the field in families or they worked as travelling carpenters or smiths etc.
When farming and industry changed to modern ways the Roms lost their sorce of income. As a result of this many Roms turn to others way including crime. Roms don't want to intergrate with non Romani and it has been proven that Roms do not always adapt too well to intergration as they tend to cause more trouble than good. According to many sources it is often the didikai (mix bloods) that get into trouble where as the traditional Roms are more laid back. The present biggest problem amongst Romani community is education. I personally think the best scheme would to teach the Roms new trades and skills that they can then pass down to their sons. Many of my family do roofs, but I must confess they are not always the best due to lack of real training. |

The differences between travellers and the Romani travelling people are, the Romany travelling people are Gypsies and their ancestors come out of India and the Eastern side of the world. Other travellers like the Irish are known as 'Tinkers' and they are not Gypsies they are travelling people who originate from Ireland. Then you have the Showmen, the original Showmen were Gypsies and some of todays Showmen are Gypsies or are of Gypsy blood but most are not. Then you have the New Age Travellers 'Hippies' they are not Gypsies. The true Gypsies worked hard to survive whether it be an honest crust or to steal to survive. They had many trades including repairing pots and pans and other things that they could mend. Sharpening knives and other such instruments. They would buy and sell anything that would provide money and trade amongst themselves. The men would go out to work with their Sons and the men of their family whilst the women would tend to their homes whether it be a wagon or a tent. Some of the traditional ways of earning money I still use today, but because of modern society a lot of the Gypsy ways have changed including the ways of earning a living. Some do building work whether it be roofing, tarmaccing or tree felling, gardening, block paving but some still do scrap metal and buying and selling. Some Gypsies still do farm work as they did many years ago and no matter what people say about Gypsies or people with Gypsy blood there is good and bad in all races. John |

My dear friend, I can't help you about the Kilby family as I have only heard of them but don't know any. Travellers made all sorts of things, there wasn't a specific trade they turned their hand to making all sorts from little wooden animals, pegs, straw hats and things out of cloth and leather materials. They even made things out of stone. My family way back made things like these and also read fortunes. And like all travellers because of the age that we live in they now turn their hand to other ways of earning a crust. I hope this helps you my friend. If you look up the Romany Gypsy and Traveller researchers David Smith and Janet Keat-Black they may be have some answers for you as they have the Romany blood and the knowledge that may help you. Sorry I can't be of any more help my friend. John |

Hi again, thank you again my friend. I found out about Janet Keet-Black and David Smith when I was trying to trace my family years ago and i actually spoke to them both on the phone. I don't have a computer at the moment but am using this whilst stayng at a friends. You can always leave me messages though and they will be passed on to me and I will relay a reply. Will check the website that you told me about too. I don't know if you already know this but they hold meetings for travellers in different areas at certain times of the year and Janet & David attend with other researchers - you may be able to find more about your family history at one of these meetings. One of the places is Basingstoke near Reading around June time. Once again my friend thank you very much, take care, hope to hear from you again. Kushti Bok my pral John |

| dear Rechel, to be ecxat, we Gypsies work like anybody else, but there are exceptions, those who are in the country who discriminate, and are not given work of any kind, to our Roma/GYpsies, so they have to do something wrong to suppot their families, like begging, or even worse ,like having to be petty theifs, thanks to the goverment that made them that way, were there is misery there must be crime in any nation, here in Brazil the same thing happens, with the lower class of the population, but today it is getting better, as for the travelers, I cannot tell you anything, because I am not sure of there lives, there also many non Gypsies travelers in England which are suppost to be Irish, who have copied the lives of our Gypsies centuries ago, Victor. |

Hello kilby.... I case you dont know what everyone else in the online world knows, it is considered very rude to use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS in your posts, it is called SHOUTING. Please stop the shouting kilby. |

Hi kilby Thanks for your kind reply. I know it is hard to see words, that is why I use only FireFox browser. With FireFox you can make the words as big as you want, anytime you want. FireFox is free you can download it here http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ You gonna love it. |

i dont mind the big letters either. we are fortunate enough just to be able to read a little and write so others can understand what your saying with out getting all grammatical, most travellers and gypsy people have not had the same education as settled and gorga people so i think showing a little grace with spelling and grammer are only to be expected. and also a lot have been taught by relitives and parents so they read and write better in capital letters. I know cause i am one. |

May the peace of the LORD be with you always. God Bless |
