Cambridge Midsummer Fair.

THE COUNTRY'S OLDEST TRAVELLING FUN FAIR
A great outling, whatever your age with thrilling rides for everyone from little ones upwards! Civic Opening Procession on Wednesday 24 June at 6:30pm.

Midsummer Fair has been visiting Cambridge's Midsummer Common for over 800 years making it the country's oldest travelling fun fair. As well as being one of the oldest, it is also the largest, with all the rides associated with the traditional fun fair! For more information on the history of the fair, please click here.

Ancient Gypsy Fair in one of Britain’s most beautiful cities. The biggest day is the 21st.

Epsom Derby

One of the biggest horse racing events in Britain with a long Gypsy history and big Gypsy attendance. There is evidence that Gypsies lived in the woodland on Epsom Downs in the early 1500s. The two day festival of horse racing dates back to 1780.

bin on phone to me mate Jimmy an he,s on his way to appleby wi his bow top wagin an two horses, he,s bin gettin away for bout half four in a mornin so,s the horses arnt pullin in the hottest part o day, he was pulled on in place called barbon tday when we talked an thats outside o kirby lonsdale an its on way to sedburgh, he says main drag is too busy an thats why he,s pulled off onto smaller roads, theres loads o wagins, carts , horses an vans makin there way up wi weather bein so good an he,ll probably pull on sumwheres before fair hill,might be packed by now, he went first part o way wi some o Dowse famly an Mick Dowse is puttin it on video, i,ll get a copy when they all gets back so that shoult be interestin, ok gang, all best ------kilby----

Early arrivals for the horse fair

Whilst the Appleby Horse Fair only lasts a week, its effects spread much wider around the county as BBC radio Cumbria's Martin Lewes finds out.

If you say "horse fair" in Cumbria, most people will think of Appleby,  but in fact the event stretches far wider than that.  It also lasts much longer than the first weekend in June, as people arrive and leave at the speed of a horse and bowtop caravan.

And it seems to get longer every year. This year the first caravans crossed the county boundary at Kirkby Lonsdale well before the end of April; that's in spite of an agreement with the authorities that roadside stopping places wouldn't be needed until the week before the fair. 

BBC Radio Cumbria's Martin Lewes, went to meet some these early arrivals to the fair, and guaged the reaction of the locals in the Sedburgh area too. Click the link below, to listen to Martin Lewes' report...

Ok kids, was talkin to him agen this morn an he,s pulled on in sedburgh, loads o lads camped at side o road there an great craic, they goes in local pub an theres a club that there made welcome in, a jingle in the till eh, anyways, he says theres a good singer on ib boozer tnite an there all meetin up in there so should be great night of it, shame weathers broke up here an think its same all over country hopethey gets a day out of it down in epsom tommorrer , ya never know, they might jus do, all best ------kilby-----

Hi Valerie , ya had a great time an good weather where ya was pulled on gargrave green eh, i was down at Jimmy Temps las week an he said as how ya was still there, anyways my young friend, was reel nice meetin ya there an i hope it re-charged all ya battery,s , god willin i,m goin down to surrey on friday when we finishes this latest job , Lyz is comin up for me, she says if i aint finish this job she,s gunna come up an kidnap me hahaha .

were gunna go over to Rosies on the saterdy an meet all her crew, must a bin meant to happen for all us to meet up i reckon , the baby always says that whats for ya in this life won,t pass ya bye for its all laid down for us even before were born , don know bout that but i,m jus glad for the chance o meetin such nice folki an i,m sure as its the richer i,ll be for meetin up wi all these good ppl all best to ye -----kilby------

Does anyone know what happened to the Appleby Fair Company website? It used to have lots of nice china and Dvds and lots of stuff all with printed pictures etc of Gypsies and fairs on the items they sold only I just checked the web-site and it seems its closed?

and also i have heard that the Appleby Fair Company has ceased trading as far as people know ?unless someone has heard different?
