The Limits my family will go to keep their secrets hidden still surprises me to this day...when I was about 17 I was shunned or kicked out and cut off from all contact from every person on my mother's side of the family who are gypsy. The reason for the shunning and cutting of all contact was the fact that I was researching our family history, and I guess they weren't so keen on that idea. There are the occasionally slip ups where the kids of the parents who have done the shunning have decided to take it upon themselves to seek me out, sometimes to see if I am as evil as their parents have made me out to be, other times to ask me why I am never at family gatherings...my response to every encounter is always the same I am not who you are looking for, anyway I received a letter today, saying if I am going to continue my research in the family lines overseas, I will be more than shunned, which to me doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I mean what more can they do to me I don't have any contact with them, and they don't have any contact with me, except for that occasional slip up, which I don't reveal who I am so they cant proof that I even talked to their kids.

It's not such an unusual story, many folks hide their heritage. For many being a Gypsy has had 'consequences'. You only have to look at the world today to know the the prejudices and steriotypical rubbish can still make life very difficult for many people.

i find it so hard to believe family can behave this way,i guess cus i have always been in a strong family unit that would do anything for each other and never dream of turning there backs on one of our own, also all my family are proud of the fact we are gypsies from the young to old, i think the gypsies that are not proud of who they are are the ones that have married out so are no long part of our culture so they feel they have to be a gorger to fit in to the life they are now living, its a sad thing, people should be like gypsyheritage proud of both her heritage and gorger side

It was shock to me at first, but my dad's side [who are not gypsy] were the ones that let me stay with them...and helped me through it

As for them marrying out, when my great grandmother emigrated she married a gypsy...they both denied their heritage and pretended they were Native American instead...even so much that they lived on a Indian Reservation and even tried to register with the Native American tribe

Gypsy heritage, why are you so afraid of your heitage? unless you know something horoble about them, as I see it if you say that you have nothing to do with these people, so why worry, keep cool my dear, not all the Gypsies are the way you think they are, you think like most gadje, and must be hating your heritage, so why don't you say that you are some one else, and not from the heritage of a Gypsy, you know some thing you make me feel like those Gypsies that are in the Ghettos in Italy or some where in Europe, do you know what, I will give you an advice, stay away from any Gypsy, becaaaaaaause I caaaan see that hate us, but don't forget your half Gypsy wether you like it or not
