Hi everyone,

As a newbie to the gypsy/traveller community (I am engaged to an English traveller), I was wondering if anyone could explain to me a bit the gypsy tradition of "sitting up" when someone dies? What does it involve and why is it done? My fiancee mentioned he would be doing this soon as a close friend of the family has sadly died.
I am keen to learn as much as I can because I believe that traditions and customs should be passed on, and when I have my own children I would like to be able to teach them as much as I can!

Also, I was wondering if there are any other traditions i.e. with marriage or with the birth of a child anyone could share with me? I have heard of "jumping the broomstick" and have found a few things on the internet, but its always nicer to have things explained by an actual person!! I expect customs will differ across different countries so it would be nice to hear from as many people as possible :).
