Afternoon all, I am new to this site and looking to find information about my heritage. I know very little about the family past my great grandmother, but know we have Romany roots from somewhere. My great grandpa was a bare knuckle fighter and my mum used to shout at me in Romany when we were in public, so that others would not understand! Some of the family were Isish a few generations back. Can anyone help me learn some new words, or some of the old ways of cooking and other craft bits? Thanks, Beshlie |

Beshlie; If you know who your family is or where they where at a certain time may be that would be a better place to find your heritage, because knowing a language or culture is only benificial to you if it is part ofyour own life. What was your g-grandpa's name? What do you mean by romany roots? And hwat worrds do you use? as each family speaks a different dialect and they also have different cultures and values. |

| My dear Beshlie I am a pure Rom, and I might help you with a few words, now my advice to you is we have a Roma Gypsy dictionary, this will help a lot, but I can only tell you a few words that are importent when you speak to a Gypsy, well here goes, Sar san, which means how are you, me sim Romni, which means I am Gypsy, te avas sasto ai baxtalo which means may you be with health and luck, but you say this to a male, to a female you say sasti ai baxtali, I hope this will help you some what. Victor. |

Thanks for your replies, I will answer them in one message, so I don't confuse myself. The interest in my heritage was mostly borne from the fact that I spent many years as a child in a distant relatives static caravan, being frightened with stories of eating hedgehogs. I know it sounds like the page of a book, but the great aunt twice removed (Or whatever she was) used to sell heather to the pubs in the town, while at the same time apparently driving a volvo! I was young when she died and her knowledge went with her, spare a few bits that got passed across my close family. The man who said he would teach me what he knew also died before I had the interest to learn, but I wanted to learn what I can before it gets lost entirely! To: connors boy: My Irish family were called Macklin, but I have little idea where they came from The English side called Simmonds, from the London area. valerierackly: The words we use at home are, I think, what is known as Romanichal. Things like dinlo, koshde bok, diddikai, gry, chav( which seems funny nowdays!) mandi, and so on, only the very basic bits. Victor: Thank you for your help withe the words. Can you reccomend a good dictionary for me to get hold of and do you know if there are any books on the old customs? I understand that musch of these would have been closely held from what I know as gorgies. Thanks to all of you for your help. B :) |

Beshilina, God bless you. The words you typed were certainly the Romaness (sp) of the English gypsies or "Romanichal". I am very familiar with them. I too am trying to find out about my ancestors. Good luck - Kushty Bokt |
