Hola Everyone, I'm back, but feel abit mean about coming back after I had asked for all my prev posts and photographs to be removed!!! But I have been assured that this site has had a much needed 'spring clean' so I am back after over a year out. Anyway nice to meet everyone athough I think I know most of you already, LOL. Both sides of my family were travellers. My Mother's side being the Romanies that travelled around Hampshire and my fathers side being of Gitano Spanish Gypsy) and Irish traveller heritage (with links to the Cooper). My fam have now however, been settled for many years now (long before I was born), but I would love to learn more of my beautiful heritage. My fam and I have been lucky enough to date our genealogy back to the 1770’s. If anyone esle has any information about the below names I would love to hear from you! AYRES Married into the Cooper fam ~ Sarah Ayres (1775) COLLINS Irish Traveller clan that hailed from Cork in 1800’s. The clan split (by love so it was said) in to two with half going on to Manchester and the other half staying back in Southampton, before moving to Portsmouth in Hampshire. The clan were warned that if they returned to Ireland they would be shot so they settled in UK. COLE Spanish gypsies that actually passed through Cork in Ireland before going to Wales in the UK and then on to the New Forest and other areas in Hampshire. My Great grandparents travelled around flogging umbrellas and dukkering. The Coles were also linked to the Haimes family and the James family. Cole means black. COOPER From the New Forest in Hampshire my link to the fam is through my mothers fam –the Knights who were from Gloucester and they spent time in Epping Forest and the New Forest. Also I am linked to them through my Fathers side as I am descended from Alice Anne Cooper (1885). JAMES Not much is known about the Gypsy James fam ~ I am still researching them. My Nana’s sister Rosa Cole Ferguson (but actually the daughter of Haimes, Mary Coles first husband, who I recently found out died in the battle of Somme) married in to them and they lived in a ‘beautiful’ vardo somewhere in the Southampton area. KNIGHTS New Forest/Epping Forest in Hampshire ~ travelled around with fairs with their stalls, doing dukkering and the ’shooting game’. The Knights bore mostly daughters who married into other bigger name fams (see above). |

I know the coles to be Irish Travellers just wondering if that could be so for your relatives. The Coopers are my old grandfathers people and I live on a site with a Cooper family. I think the Kalderash (not sure of the correct spelling there, just spelling it as I say it) Romanies are the group that most Coopers and Smiths came from. I also believe the name Cooper has been derived from being 'Copper-smiths' hence 'Smith's' being one of the largest known English Gypsy nav's, along side 'Lee'. The Romanies word 'calo' means black but I am affraid not alot of English Gypsy's speak the language. It's been long forgotten and not used in this country, although I can't blame the ancester's for this as it was actually elegal to rokker Rommaness in England a crime punishable by death.
Stuart,
Hi hope you find out all you search for
All the best Tilly |

Hi Tilly, nice to meet you, darling and thank you for answering my enquiry. I'll let my Nan know as Mary Cole was her mother. I should of been clearer sorry 'Cole' is suppose to be derived from 'Cola' which is the old English word meaning black. I wasn't refering to the Romani word.
If anyone else as any more information in particular to the 'Knight' family. |

Thanks to everyone who has been helping me with my geneology research. I have been told by that... AYRES - a.k.a HARES, AYERS and AIRS - recorded: 1553 TO PRESENT DAY - across country. COLLINS - a.k.a. COLINS - recorded 1891 TO PRESENT DAY - including Hampshire - connected to BOSWELL, CAMPBELL and SCAMP COLE - a.k.a COIL - recorded 1902 TO PRESENT DAY - including Hampshire - connected to WALTER COOPER - recorded 1625 TO PRESENT DAY - across country- connected to GASKIN and SHERRIFF JAMES - recorded 1750 TO PRESENT DAY - across country, WALES and IRELAND - connected to most famillies. KNIGHTS - recorded 1725 TO PRESENT DAY - including Hampshire - connected to HUXLEY and LOCK It's interesting that 'Collins' may be linked to Boswells as Daddy took me to a museaum once because he wanted to 'show' me my hertiage and their was a Boswell there and both famillies seemed to know of each other. The Coles being recorded in 1902 is about right as before that they would of been in Ireland. I do have a question about the James family ~ are they of Irish Traveller or Romani blood. My Nana seems to think Romani, but my research keeps leading me to Ireland? |

Tisa,
Nice to meet you also. How old are you? I am 33 my birthday. What area do you live in? I'm in Surrey.
Good luck with your research. I tried to trace my family history because I wonted to see the black and white documents, if you know what I mean. My old Granny can go back, be word of mouth at least 180 years. Any way I had a good friend help me but we only got around to doing a little on my husbands side, lol. We chatted to much in between. If she was around I know she'd be able to help. Very good with romany history. Any way she may pop in in time.
Shahnee,
