Hi all...I'm new to this sight and finding so much so interesting. I'm also looking for lots of help. My husband''s grandfather is William Staveley born in Kent in 1886 and married to Phoebe Ransley born in Faversham, Kent in 1888. They ended up living in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey. William''s father is William (we believe) born in Dover about 1867 and was married to Mary -? born about 1868 in Ramsgate. We assume they were "travellers" because on the information we have they were Hawkers and Horse Traders and lived in caravan parks. I would love to see if anyone can help me find more information or assist in telling me where to find more information. I have come to a stand still. Thanks to each or all of you for any assistance.....tish |

STANLEY, William. Born, Croydon, 1886. GRO Ref: 2a / 261. No " Staveley " listed for Kent, that year. (FBMD).
However, I do see a putative mention of Staveley, 1891, Kent. (R. Dawson. ARITF)
Phoebe Ransley born in Faversham, Kent in 1888. Confirmed. (FBMD). Dawson also gives that name for Kent and Sussex. Eighty years of usage? That, combined with the alleged marriage between the to (plus trades) makes a case. Now; Where's their Marriage?
Tishyr317; What sources have ye, for what ye telling us here, please? Forgive me, but; Ye 'sound' new to all this? If so, no worries. There are places and people who'll relish sorting through it with ye.
Forgive me, only I'm exhausted right now and must get some sleep. Tell us what ye know / from where. Saves anyone researching ground ye've covered.
'Night .....

Ditch, I so appreciate your help. I am new to this and am very willing to learn what you can teach me.
On the 1891 census there is a William Staveley and wife Mary with children Billy, James and Pacie. I believe Billy is the son (or my mother-in-law's father). She has a sister Pacie that I think the name was passed from this Pacie listed. Again, I am just trying to put pieces of this jigsaw together. The 1891 census says they lived in Maxton (and I am having trouble reading the defined caravan park--maybe it is "orange tree yard"). I am sure you will laugh at my reading of the very small print.
From the England & Wales, FBMD, I have found a William Staveley who passed in 1891 at the age of 24 in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter in Thanet, Kent.
I have the marriage certificate of William Staveley and Phoebe Ransley (the son of the above William born in 1886 and married Phoebe on 21 Nov 1914 in the Registrars Office in Sheerness on the isle of Sheepey. There it shows the father as William Staveley (deceased) and occupation as hawker. Phoebe's father was James Ransley and his occupation was that of horse dealer.
Prior to the 1891 census of William Staveley born about 1867, I have not been able to find anything. For his wife, Mary A, because I do not have a maiden name, I have not been able to find anything.
Any clues or documentation that you could help me with I would be very grateful. If there is anyone else on this forum that could put clues together for me, I would be most thankful. In reading from this web site and others, I am so enjoying what I am learning and so warmly appreciate the love you have for each other and the trials and challenges you each have in your lives. Mostly, I feel the warm spirit that resides with each of you. Thanks to each of you for sharing what matters most to your hearts.......tish |

Ok, Tish. Well, ye obviously no slacker and ye trying to help yeself. Worthy cause then.
It obviously is Staveley. No further question about that. First thing that strikes me is; Ye talking about 1891. Ye working in a relationship to ye Mother In Law. What about the 1901 and 1911 Census'?
Golden rule of Genealogy is that we work Back from ourselves, yeah? So, ye have to work back from ye husband / MIL. That'll take ye to the 1911, then 1901. What's happened there?
I'm not after the details of living people, obviously. That's taboo. I'm just needing to ascertain that ye following procedure and covering all the normal and expected bases.

Ditch, thanks for your help. I do know that William Staveley died in 1891 in Thanet, so the later census' won't help me in that direction. His wife was Mary A (don't know the maiden name) and I know she remarried. My husband's cousin remembers a "Grannie Denny" and Grannie Denny had a son David. Again I am trying to put puzzle pieces together so I assume Mary A. married a Denny. The only problem is....again.....I can't find any Denny's in that area with her children (Billy, James and Pacie as listed on the 1891 census) and a David. I'm wondering if it was a Benny (Beaney, Beeney) and got changed.
Any thoughts you might have I would welcome......tish |

Posted By tishyr317 on 23 Nov 2009 13:11 My husband's cousin remembers a "Grannie Denny" and Grannie Denny had a son David.
See, this is what I'm trying to point out here, Tish. This is why we do it the way we do. A cautious, painstaking, finger tip search, back up from ourselves.
I remember we had an 'Uncle Eric'. Only, he wasn't actually our uncle. Just a very good friend of our Dads. Now, what if my wires got crossed somewhere and I started trying to find and work from this " Uncle " I remember from my earliest childhood. God alone knows where I'd end up.
That's why, 'officially' ye have to start with ye own (In this case, it seems, ye husbands) Birth Certificate. That irrefutably lays down his parents. One of those had a sibling who gave birth to this Cousin. Find and prove That relationship. Then, that done, ye can look at the cousins parents. And so on, and so forth.
This Cousins " Grannie Denny " could be from either side of their own parents family. They might, effectively, thus be little to do with ye husbands direct line. As for trying to morph " Denny " into Beanie? Please don't do that. Else ye'd might as well change ye name to Boswell, by Deed Poll, and we can all go home for tea.
I have a cousin who's trying to work just like you are. Last time she popped up, bemoaning the fact that she's getting no where fast, I reminded her; " And have ye Ever Yet done anything about getting those Papers I told ye about? " Her disappearance from my mailer speaks volumes. Once more she's pouted and gone off to chase names her cousin is half remembering.
I don't wish to sound mean or to dampen ye spirits. Be happy! What ye scratching about for is just a few, well chosen Certificates away. But, ye must get hold of and examine those Cert's. Doing things correctly may unlock something ye missing and allow all those other, lost Census Returns to tumble into place.
