Hi there,

I''m a student and I''m writing an article on travellers. I understand you are all probably very busy but was hoping someone could find the time to answer some of my questions.
1) What are the biggest issues concerning travellers at the moment?
2) Was the channel 4 show (on a couple of weeks ago I think) about traveller weddings correct in how they portrayed the traveller community?

Any answers you can give me would be brilliant.

Regards, Becky .

Can any members help Becky ? just post what your oppinion was of the wedding and wether you thought it was accurate or not and any other thoughts you may have concerning to-days Travellers.
Romany ,Gypsy,Traveller,? are they terms you use for yourself ? or do you differentiate between the names often just generally used by the general public.

hello, my names valerie. i can only give you my oppinion on this but here goes.
1) What are the biggest issues concerning travellers at the moment?
I think one of the major concerns now is that there is not enough site provission for the travellers niether private nor council and it is getting extremly harder to find some-where to live. there are an estamated 2000 extra places needed here in the north of england, thats yorkshire lancashire and humberside making up the most. with-out decent site provission it makes education health and employment very difficult to access, illegall encampments inevitable and social and community relations fractious, and unworkable. how can travellers get on with settled communities when they are forced into social and economic hardship .

2)2) Was the channel 4 show (on a couple of weeks ago I think) about traveller weddings correct in how they portrayed the traveller community?

this depends upon the travellers in question, to one group it is a fair representaion but to many others its not. we are not all the same.
for instance the average age of my family to get married must be around twenty two or so. recently there have been the odd younger one but like my last wedding the bride was 22, her sister whos getting married later in the year will be 20 when she weds. the youngest has been 17 but mainly they tend to be in there twenty's. some have even been in there thirties. i was 22. its not such a big deal i suppose. we mainly have family weddings, and there aren't that many of us wanting catholic church weddings as there are many of us who are Born again Christians, so we'll either have a registry office and then a blessing later or just the regestry office, then some have like a wedding in a Christian church, we are just like any-one else. we all have our own thing, if its what we want for our wedding then thats ok. we're not all catholic and a lot of us see all that pomp as unnessesary and some even think its vulgar, or untastful. being a dignified and modest wedding can be much more of a thing to go for.

May the peace of the LORD be with you always. God Bless
