Revealed: 'Bin Laden' gipsy behind illegal camp is wealthy businessman who lives in a five-bedroom house

By Alistair Self and Martin Delgado
Last updated at 4:40 PM on 9th May 2010

The man who set up an illegal gipsy camp which has destroyed the tranquility of a village is a wealthy entrepreneur with a number of business interests.

Noah Burton – who describes himself as ‘Bin Laden’ because of the local hostility towards him – has moved with 13 relatives and friends on to a field at Meriden in Warwickshire, saying they are all ‘persons of nomadic habit of life’.

But a Mail on Sunday investigation has revealed that Mr Burton, 45, who drives a Dodge pick-up truck with personalised number plates, runs a business buying and selling American-style motor homes.

Noah Burton

And angry locals claim that for 24 years Mr Burton lived in a five- bedroom house with his wife and children in a prosperous Midlands commuter village.

The electoral roll shows him registered at the house at Trevallion stud farm, which is owned by his father-in-law, in the Warwickshire village of Balsall Common until last month.

One Meriden villager, who did not want to be named, said: ‘He told me it was a five-bedroom house and that he’d lived there for 24 years. He said it wasn’t a caravan but a house.’

The latest guidelines on gipsies issued to local authorities by the Department of Communities and Local Government say they should be given land for their caravans because many of them suffer ‘an aversion to bricks and mortar’.

Mr Burton, a father of five, now occupies the largest and most luxurious caravan in the meadow at Meriden which he bought a year ago for £50,000.

According to his business card, he runs a company called Burton RVs which deals in Winnebago motor homes.

Gipsy camp

He also owns a vintage Jensen sports car which he is currently restoring in a workshop on an adjoining piece of land.

Another villager who has met him on several occasions said: ‘He gave me the impression he is a businessman, not a traveller.

'He dresses smartly and is very articulate. His company imports and sells Winnebago motor homes. He has a real passion for vintage cars.

'He showed me the Jensen and he comes over almost every night to tinker with it.’

Mr Burton has recently separated from his wife and his move out of the house and on to the meadow has angered his father-in-law.

Nelson Smith, 70, said: ‘I have been part of the community here for 45 years and I wouldn’t like it if someone set up a travellers’ site next to my home.

'I think what he has done is very wrong and I don’t want to have anything to do with him.

‘My daughter has finished with him and that is that.’

The six-acre meadow at Meriden – population 2,743 – is filled with caravans and pick-up trucks belonging to the travellers.

Last week around 600 villagers attended a meeting in the village hall to protest against any move to turn the site into a permanent gipsy settlement.

The newcomers were stopped from building in the field after 50 villagers set up a human barricade and turned away the first of 90 lorries carrying an estimated 1,800 tons of hardcore. Round-the-clock vigils are continuing.

In a planning application for the meadow that Mr Burton submitted to Solihull Council last year, Mr Burton wrote of his 19-year-old son, who is also called Noah.

He said: ‘There are no other pitches available for him and his girlfriend in the locality other than the application site and he cannot afford to buy any land
of his own.’

Another member of the group, according to Mr Burton, had been previously staying at a roadside site ‘without access to even the most basic facilities’.

But one of the protest organisers, farmer Lawrie Arnold, said: ‘They obviously planned the move. Noah Burton is a well-off businessman. They are not poor travellers who have nowhere else to go.’

Mr Burton’s planning application is supported by a 16-page document which claims travellers are entitled to special treatment because they are ‘gipsies and persons of nomadic habit of life’ as defined by two pieces of legislation.

One is the Caravan Sites Act of 1960 and the other is a circular issued in 2006 by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, who was then John Prescott.

The Prescott directive says that the Government’s aim is ‘to increase significantly the number of sites in appropriate locations with planning permission in order to address under-provision’.

Trevallion

Asked about Mr Burton, Basil Burton, chairman of the National Romany Rights Association, said: ‘Noah is a wealthy man. He owns lots of land all over the country.

'He collects scrap and deals in this and that. He has earned his money legitimately and has no police record.

'He’s a genuine sort of chap and I get on very well with him.’

Last night Mr Burton declined to comment on his business interests, saying: ‘I have been instructed by my solicitor not to talk.’

The Mail on Sunday made several attempts to contact his solicitor, Sarah Green of Bristol firm South West Law, but received no response.

Channel 4 have been inundated with requests from young travellers wanting to star in the next series of 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings' because they are keen to become famous.

Channel 4 has been inundated with requests from travellers to star in the next series of 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings'.

The show - which follows the lives of gypsies in the run-up to their extravagant wedding days - has been one of the network's biggest-ever hits, and bosses are already planning a whole host of follow-ups, with youngsters clamouring to take part.

A source said: "It has been a huge topic of conversation and everyone wants to be on it. The girls and boys who have been on it have gained notoriety within their community - a bit like being a local celebrity."

Channel 4 have already filmed 'Big Fat Gypsy Christmas' and spin-off shows about traveller life are set to air next year.

Even though some travellers have criticised the show - saying it makes them look bad and is reflecting negatively on the community as a whole - the majority are keen for more coverage.

The insider added to The Sun newspaper: "Some have spoken out against the show but there is certainly no shortage of people who want to go on it."

Meanwhile, Craig Revel Horwood has been forced to apologise after calling gypsies "pikeys" on TV.

The 'Strictly Come Dancing' host said: "I do apologise and I had to apologise at Christmas because I said it to one of my friends and he walked out. I do apologise to the nation for the pikey remarks. I take it back."

Tesco pull 'racist' Royal Wedding book which showed Prince William and Kate as gypsies

Wills and Harry

A BOOK poking fun at Prince William and Kate Middleton by depicting them as gypsies has been pulled by Tesco over claims it is RACIST to travellers.

All 2,000 supermarket stores, including hundreds across the Midlands, have shelved copies of Will and Kate’s Big Fat Gypsy Wedding after a complaint from the Romany Women’s Union.

The picture-led book shows the newly-titled Duchess of Cambridge donning a garish pink meringue dress, whilst her groom wears a trashy white suit and a cheesy grin.

A mocked-up picture of the Queen is also featured – behind the reins of a traditional rag and bone cart. A doctored snap of hubby Prince Philip shows him rolling up his shirt sleeves to reveal his latest tattoo.

Yet despite being a big hit with the public, a Tesco spokeswoman has confirmed that the £6.99 book has now been removed from all of its stores because of complaints.

President of the Romany Women’s Union Josephine Smith, 35, said she was delighted at the decision.

“I got in touch with Tesco because the book was discriminatory to our people,” she told the Sunday Mercury. “I explained why and pointed out the pages in question.

“There is having a laugh and a joke, and there is taking it too far.

“You just wouldn’t be able to get away with this with other communities, like the Jewish.

"To be fair, Tesco has been excellent but now I am working on getting it removed from Waterstones and Amazon.

“I am confident we will succeed with them as well.”

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “It is never our intention to sell products which may offend and as soon as we became aware of concerns regarding this book, it was immediately removed from sale.

“It is not for us to say whether something is offensive. It is all about the community and what they would consider offensive.”

Brothers Alex and Rory Scarfe are authors of the tongue-in-cheek book, which also depicts Prince Harry in a bare-knuckle fight and a bejewelled Fergie being led away from Buckingham Palace by cops.

It was published before the Royal Wedding and had followed on from the huge success of Channel 4’s My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

The TV programme was a massive hit with the general public, although sections of the traveller community claimed some of the scenes had been hammed up for the cameras.

The Romany Women’s Union has since been working to dispel the stereotypical view of gypsies – including staging a beauty pageant for traveller girls.

Mrs Smith said: “We are not tarty, stay-at-home housewives as portrayed in the TV show.

“Our aim is to find someone beautiful and proud of who and what they are.”

Alex and Rory Scarfe were unavailable for comment last night. Publishers Simon & Schuster refused to comment.

Bow to the 'Gypsy King': Thousands of UK travellers crown their new leader in historic ballot

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 2:22 PM on 26th June 2011

Hail the king: Ladislav Stojka, from Peterborough wears his crown on the day of his coronation.

With a gold crown perched jauntily on his head, Britain's first-ever elected 'Gypsy King' takes a bow.

Ladislav Stojka, 53, was crowned after thousands of travellers in the UK's Roma Gypsy community cast their vote in an historic ballot.

Mr Stojka, was chosen from 19 candidates by representatives from 10 cities including Bolton, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford and London.

He was given a traditional crown and 'old sticks,' but left by sleek limousine rather than horse and cart to attend a celebration party with friends and family in his home city of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Once Ladislav was officially named the winner, he sat on a throne as Miss Roma 2011, Maria Kalinacoba, 17, of Chatham, Kent placed the crown on his head.

His coronation was announced at Peterborough Town Hall where representatives met to cast their block votes from each community during an election which lasted little over an hour.

Around 100 members of the Roma Gypsy community, largely from Czech Republic and Slovakia, attended the inaugural election ceremony.

One happy representative said it was a great day for the Roma community.

He said: 'This is an important day for us. We now have a Gypsy King who has been elected.

Organiser Roman Cicko, who moved from Slovakia in 1999 and now represents the 4,000 Roma living in Peterborough, hopes it will become the first step to creating a Gypsy Council.

He said: 'The new king must be a respectable man and will encourage education.

'There are maybe five different gypsy groups in this country and we're trying to bring all of them together under one Gypsy council.

'We hope eventually to have a Gypsy Council where our Gypsy King will sit with other members of the Gypsy and travelling community and speak on our behalf.

'We want to see what we can do for this country rather than what the country can do for us after it has provided us with sanctuary.'

The King will act as a point of contact for the police, local council and government to discuss issues and will encourage integration.

The Commission for Racial Equality estimates that there are between 270 and 360,000 Gypsies and Travellers in England in settled housing.

 A further 100,000 maintain a nomadic lifestyle.

I protest, he may represent us in England but not in other countires, we are estamated to be about 15 million, but never the less he must act as a representative of Gypsies in England only, that is all, but to be a king is absurd, we never had a ligitimate king, that is apointed by the majority, of Roma/Gypsies neather by the world, but if the Engish Gypsies want him, that is their business, what we want is a representetive to be recognized by the UN, and the world, then I shall recognize that person not as a king but just a man who will put us in the worlds family, and have a voice in the UN, then and only then, I might call him a prime minister of all Gypsies, I can bet my last dollar that the British government has a good laugh, over this event, now if he will give education and better the life of the Roma/Gypsies in England, let him do so by all means, and I mean, as a king, as a beggar or anything else, what is good for the Gypsies of England, other countries to follow, and maybe we shall unite and vote for a person to lead us, Victor Vishnevsky

this Ladislav Stojka, who was crowned recently by a beautiful, Gypsiy girl she is called miss Gypsy, is the funnyiest thing that I saw since I am a memeber of JF, this man must be rich, but I doubt if he is highly educated , he made a mistake, he should have proclaimed himself the head of the Romani counsul that would sound better, if he has such big connections with the local government, but, no! he wants to be called a kiing, for us of other countries and even in England, not in his terotery, he means nothing to us, and never will, unless a miricle will happen and all of England will consider him the king of Gypsies, I say again only in England, and no were else, Victor Vishnevsky

It is good to know that that the Folk of England, see it as a farce, because he was not elected, and he has no right to call himself a King of all Roma/Gypsies, he may be amongst his folks, but he does not mean anything to others, Roma, and never will.
