Has anyone connected the Smith's of Calvert County Maryland to the Gypsy Smith's? Richard Smith, Walter Smith, John Smith, Luke Smith who are living in Calvert County Maryland early 1700's ? All the Smith's just named, are found on many of the same records as my Richard Lock also of Calvert County Maryland 1728 through 1750. |

I might add, Richard Lock is likely one and the same Richard Lock of Ampney Crucis, Gloucestershire 1690s, and possibly one and the same Richard Lock of Islip, Oxfordshire 1690's. Thought I might add that to see if it may tie in with the Smith's. |

Hi Smith, I agree we are all connected somehow. I am related to Collins, Cole (but they are of Irish Traveller blood, although my great grandmother Mary cole was mixed as her mother was Gitano, she later settled down with my great grandfather who was part Gitano from West Indies and Romani on his mother's side). I am also connected to the Coopers, Knights, Ayres and James famillies. Some of my uncles and cousions have married in to the Smiths. We all live in the South of England although my brother and I have fam up in Manchester (Collins, Carter and Haimes) as well. |

Hi folks, Sorry to interupt the convo but just wanted to say that i found out recently that my Grandmother's mother's (does that make any sense) maiden name was Smith (my father's mother). She married a Lee, i don't know where they were from but i do know my grandmother married my grandfather in Lincoln.
I'm most likely grasping at straws, and i know that many folki have Smith in the family - but i do know my Grandmother was IVY (SMITH) LEE on the census records before she married my grandfather, so perhaps someone reconises that name?
Well, a long shot i admit - but i'm hitting brick walls with the family tree business!!
All the best to you all and sorry for butting in, Shahnee |

Hello to you Leahcim, Thanks for acknowledging me.I have been reading your posts around the site, all interesting stuff.I feel i have a lot to say to you and discuss, but want to take it a bit at a time.I could rokker till the cows come home about all the things you say and i will never get tired of the subject.I read you can weigh folki up even in a crowded pup with your back turned. This is a Gypsy trait and i understand instantly what you are saying.Talking with your eyes and feeling the words is a pleasure to hear from another. Many of us our born with this and you soon perfect the art when you have been calling door to door to get ya living.I have done my share of calling,i was a good getter and miss it terribly.I have introduced travellers to my mother -in -law (aunt Freda) in the past, and some times she would be completly un co-operative and embarrassingly cagey.I could see she was in weigh-up mode and it took something special to be felt or said to make her open up even a little. She says she is a true Romany,i can recognise her family by this look and it's more like a feeling from within when our eyes meet.I am often asked who i am one of by complete strangers (all travellers) whether in a shop the street or a pub.I have the look of the old Ayres family and there are a lot of travellers around the southern counties that have a drop of Ayres blood in their family ancestry.I have a beleif that the name was from Hairs and the Hearn's are from the same people (both families are from the hairy ones) A James Hair was one of the original Gypsies recorded with the Faa/Faw family that were in Scotland in the early 1500s. You are right when you say about names and the Smith's.The family have told me off many times for doing too much rokkering to the gorgies and prefer to keep their entire family as secret as possible.I decided to mention old names because that's what family history is all about and the hope that some one will be related or have further information. There is talk of a wisdom Smith and i think he was from around Herefordshire and is said to be from the same Smith family. My in law Smith's travelled the West country, some have settled around the Bristol area and Somerset.Aunt Freda was born in a very fine horse drawn waggon in Somerset in 1927.She says her mother was "Poor kid aVERDLE",now all other travellers i hear or read about say VARDO. She says it is what the family said when she was being born in the waggon.Everyone seems to say Gorga or Gorgio, but we say Gorgies, and we say money is Vongar ,not Wongar or luvva. They had a wide travelling circuit all along the Southern counties and West country.Granfer Smith was a rat catcher and he was brought up with his cousin Liberty Smith who ran a boxing booth with his sons.Fighting and this Smith family have gained a lot of respect over the generations from the other travellers. When i show Aunt Freda photos and pictures in books of Smith family members from the midlands and north, she regognises them instantly and says it's her dad's people.I don't know abont my Smith ancestors coming from this same family but i know they went into showland and when my Great graet uncle, Andrew Smith, died in 1937,the newspapers said that the Smith family he was from had a history of travelling the old charter fairs for over 300 years. I thought it was only my wife and one of her brothers that dipped their toast into their cup of tea,and the bread and sugar thing. It is our wedding anniversary next Monday on the 8th September,24 years, maritual bliss!.I can see you are a family man too,we have 5 chavvies, oldest boy Sam has served 5 years RN and was on the Nottingham.Eldest gal,Leanda, last year at Plymouth uni, youngest is Reuben nearly 12.My birthday was last 22nd August,i was 44,i am six foot four and seventeen stone, but she still wears the trousers! I know my place and don't mess with the Smith's it can be dangerouse fir my health lol, wll thats enough for now,ive worn meself out, cheers mush, kakker ,Kerry

Hi (Kerry) Gypsy hawkins,
Sorry to interject on your convo with Leahcim. But something you said hit a chord with me. It was just what you said about knowing a person by a look, regards family looks, i mean. When i showed Shaz the photo of my dad, a long, long time ago, she said "He's a Lee", but at the time i didn't know me family history and said she got it wrong. But since i found out that me dads mum was a Lee, as i said in my previous post - Shaz was right - and i think confirms waht you have been saying.
If i read your post right - and i do hope i did. Knoiwng a person and knwoing the truth from a lie said by them is always easier when you are face to face with someone, the mouth can lie all it likes but the eyes and body tell a different story. That's the trouble with this internet chat - you can never be truly certain who you are talking too until you meet them face to face, can you? So i know what's meant by reconising someone for Rom when you meet - i have had that experience. But even though i guessed they wern't their intentions seemed honourable - but they wern't andi got me fingers well and truly burnt. Suppose i should have trusted my gut instinct at the time - but i just put it down to me being too suspicious - but i've learnt.
Your history is so interesting, i hope you don't mind me saying? Wish i could find out more of mine - that's why i think it is to important to meet for this open day - someone somewhere might know something i don't and then i can move forward. Daft as it might sound, knowing about my family and the ancestors is important to me, not for anynthing specific as such, or for anyone else, just a need to know for myself, does that makes sense?
Anyways, i am sorry to butt into your converstation, i wish you all the best, Shahnee |

I totally agree with what is written here. Only 10 per cent of our communcation is done by words. On top of that you don't really have 'any' idea who is on the other end of your internet communcation unless you actually meet them or know them face to face. You can only make assumptions and everyone is percieved differently. For example one person can be seen as nice by one person and aggressive by another! I agree that you can tell a Romani or Traveller by just meeting them face to face. I think it isn't just to do with looks but also they way hey conduct themselves. |

Hi Tisa,
I'm glad i'm not the only that feels that until you meet the person you don't know the person - but even then some are so devious that the mask dosn't slip till later - and then don't we feel the dinlo?!
I agree that it isn't just looks - it has an awful lot to do with how they conduct themselves - that gave the game away for me as regarding me finger burning - the things they did and said i would never even consider - more then me life's worth - i was brought up better then that.
Don't you think upbringing has alot to do with reconising a Rom? I mean, you can often tell that a way a person behaves comes from how they were brought up - not saying its gospel, as you do get those that go against the grain, but for the most part conduct travels naturally down. I brought my kiddies up the way i was brought up, and my eldest is bringing his kiddies up the same way.
Just a thought, all the best to you, Shahnee |
