hey everyone, my name's lizzie and im not a Gypsy or Traveller but i've got some close friends who are and im well interested in the Gypsy way of life. im doing a project for school on Gypsies and Travellers and education and just wondering what you've got opinions and chat about how Gypsies and Travellers enjoy/don't enjoy school now, in the past and what the futures got in store. because i've not got Gypsy routes i understand if it's not appropriate for me to be on here, but i just thought i'd give it a pop!
if anyone's got an opinion, on the similarities and differences between Gypsy and Gorgio experiences at school, what school should be like for Gypsies, what is the point of school, what could be improved and things like that i would really appreciate to find out what you think!!
ive interviewed 4 Gypsy friends but there's not many others around manchester at the moment that I know, so i'd really like youre opinions.
thanks!

Hello Lizzie,
Welcome. I taught my youngest at home because of the louts that are around everywhere and all the drugs etc. She has turned out fine, it did cost a lot to get her through exams whereas school is free. I was a teacher and had first hand experiance of the kids of today, and I was lucky as I know a lot of teachers who I used to work with. We have many non gypsy friends who say if they had a choice wouldn't send the kids to school, its getting more popular not to. Having said that I think they do miss out on how to socialise. I think Nursury school is good. I went to school and gypsy jibes, I just used to whack them and that was the end of that, but of course now its not allowed!
Call in anytime for a chat or if we can answer more questions. Lyz

My dear Lizzie, your just the person I want to talk too, you see I am a pure Gypsy Lovari, that is my clan, and I live in Brazil, and I am also a sort of an activist for my people through out the world, my fight for my people is of course about discrimination, but the main fight equaly importent is education, I want to see the day that our children will all go to school, no matter in what country they live in, with out being discriminated, and I also want to advice the elders of any clan, to see to their childrens education, and also those udults that had no education at all, you see I believe that to learn is never to late, we also have some bad customs that does not allow Gypsy girls to go to school. that is not to mix with other nationalities, the reason is to stop them from future mix marriges, etc, these of course are the ignorent, Gypsies that ecxists untill today, and I consider this as the reason why our Gypsies are not going forward in time, this must stop, so that we may be in the family of the world, your new found friend, Victor

my dear Lyz, I was happy to hear from you that you agree with me in most of they reply I gave to Lizzie, I did not know that you were a teacher, and also a true Romni, that made me very happy to hear, Lyz while you were a teacher, you should have told the director, of that school, that our Gypsy people did not get that education, that we the Gypsies deserve, or any high authourity, were you were teaching! if we don't protest we will go no where, there must be good organs in the British government that watches the human rights organisation, and obeys it's laws, other wise we will have a long way to go till our children will be fairly and equaly educated, please answer me! your friend Victor

Hello Victor,
I used to teach English and also teach autistic kids social skills but had to retire early due to Arthritis.
I think all kids deserve an education and schooling, but over here you have to choose the school with care, but above all teaching kids right and wrong should be done at home.
There were gypsy kids at the school I worked in and they were treated the same as anyone else.
Good to hear from you Victor, take care, Lyz

my dear Lyz,I am so sorry to hear that you have Arthritis, but with today's medicine, I am sure you will be alright soon, but there is another thing that is importent, have faith in God and especially in your self, faith moves mountains, but there is a catch to it all, you must try with all your heart to believe that you will be alright, of course with God's help, that's what my grand ma, used to tell me over a century ago, don't give up try and try again, and I am sure you will be cured! anyway you have given me good news you said that our Gypsy children are treated the same way as every body else in the English schools, you cannot imagen how happy this news make me feel,I always said that in England, there is some discrimination, but it is limited to those who don't obey the law, may God cure you soon, your friend Victor

Hi everyone, excellent topic here. My brothers and I are addressing this very issue right now... about schooling for our children.

One of my brothers is home schooling all his children. His approach is that school brainwashes a child and that is correct. Also being a teacher I know that school is just that... schooling and it is not necessarily EDUCATION.

Also, our children tend to be a little (sometimes very) different in their approach to life (due to their early training at home and their culture) and school tends to retard the educational and learning process for them. In Australia, the decision to home school our children is not based so much on racist issues, but more so, on mind controlling factors that people are not very aware of.

School's goal is to brain wash people to become good servants for the government.
Government... Govern/Control... Ment/Mente/Mind... Government = Mind Control.

Another one of my brothers... has taken one of his children out of school and is also going to start home schooling him. He has another child who is still going to a private Christian school where we believe they will receive a more open minded (spiritual) education.

At the moment, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my children. I believe that whether they go to school or not, if we, as parents, do our best to rear our children with high values and teach them with love and care, that they will get best of both worlds. School is excellent to expose our children to a myriad of experiences that home schooling does not provide.

Great to hear different opinions.

Think positively. Act positively. And leave no fingerprints.

Hi Shinari,
I agree with your statement about government and school.
Only time i have been to "school", was when i was taken from my family in germany and lived in childrenshome for little while, befor my Kako Achim came and got me out. None of my chavvies been to school, they all have been homeschooled.
I do not agree with your statement, that school is excellent to expose our children to a myriad of experiences that home schollong does not provide.....

Victor you say that education in english schools, that the discrimination is toward those who don't obay the law, let me tell you my nephew went to a primary school, his mam changed his school as she wanted him to go to the catholic school. He went to the catholic school for over a year. he was ten years old, he played out as children do and he went to school.
One day it came that the forms for the children to move up to the big school came home. His mother filled out theforms and took them back to the school, a few days after she inquired how long it would be before she found out which upper school he would be going to.She was told she'd have to see the head-master, so off she went to see him. When she was talking to him of how her son was getting along, the head-teacher got out the form and he threw it in his bin, and he told my sister that our kind dont need to bother with upper school as they dont get on anyway.(they dont need education, they have no need for it).
what crime exactly did a ten year old child commit by being born a Romani, its not illegal is it? his mother did'nt do any crime by sending her boy to school. so what do you mean.{I always said that in England, there is some discrimination, but it is limited to those who don't obey the law}

May the peace of the LORD be with you always. God Bless

OK, here it goes...
I'm in favor of Homeschooling as long as it is done right.
I've seen a lot of "Homeschooling" where the parents could'nt read or write, I don't understand how they can teach the kids that way.
Homeschooling takes alot of dedication on all parts.
I'm in no way a fan of the public school system.
I believe that we need our own Romani Schools, with Romani Teachers to teach our children.
Just my two cents worth....

I'm wth you Tinka, it would be great to have gypsy schools, I could go back to work then!! I think home teaching is best, I taught my daughter at home even though I was a teacher for kids with learning difficulties, my daughter has grown up with ok and is hoping to join the police force, God help me!! We have got my Grandaughter in to a Roman Catholic school as my daughter says she missed out on the social side of things, she has a good point but these days there is too much trash on the streets and I would do anything to keep kids in my family away from them and drugs and things. Hi Lizzie,

I guess your 'project' for school will be over now, LOL. But I was pulled out of school and educated at home as I was bullied because of my dark looks. My daughter however, has blonde hair and blue eyes so at least she doesn't have the worry of racist remarks like the ones I recieved, but l I am currently thinking of putting my daughter into private education when she turns 3. If this happens she will be one of only a handful in my very large famiily (trust me when I say on the last count I had over 60 cousions!!!) that has attended private education.
