Hello Stuart!
I'm quite new here myself, and I also have but recently discovered about my Sinti Roots - and proud of it!
Whereabouts in SW France are you? I know France quite a bit, lived there for a year and a half, as well as in Ireland - now that was just about the best time of my life!
I live currently in Germany, but don't like it at all. People are so different from the Irish, I'm very homesick!
I have just begun to explore this here web site, and it's very interesting and helpful, I think, so welcome (even if it comes from a newby :-))

Hi again, Stuart.
Dordogne is great! I've visited there some years back and found the landscape incredibly beautiful. I'm a trained archaeologist, so there was much to see for me, the caves, the museums, Lascaux and Perigueux... and I found the people quite nice, too. My fav part of France is Brittany.
I know about getting itchy feet. I live in a house too here in Germany and I can't even afford a car (let alone a caravan), just a small motorbike, so I'm chained here and it's getting worse by the day. I'm planning to do at least a months' hiking tour with my dog when that darned work project is over - just to get on the road again. I miss getting about terribly....
cheers, Tani

Hi ALIVEINFRANCE,

Lucky you to be in France - i do miss living there!

We lived in Tolouse, and travelled to Andorra, which was a beautiful place - and then went through to Spain. Have you ever been in those areas?

Best to you both,

Shahnee

I too live in France, Normandie actually where it seems my family originated from donkey's years ago! Strange how fate springs little surprises like this when you least expect them.

Weather has been pretty awful here at times and certainly not what is expected for august, yet I feel I am Home in every sense of the word. We came here before I discovered the connection, nevertheless I feel I have always known this place, the fields and flowers and my beautiful old house, plus the odd thing is that this house was built the year my grandfather was born. Its as if she has been waiting for me and I will never leave her now because life here is far too precious to go back to the rat race in uk. I shall grow old with our dogs, my birds, the goat and our little pig instead.

Hello ALIVEINFRANCE,
Well i do hope you get a chance to visist Toulouse, and please see Andorra, still the smallest principality in northern Europe, it is the most stunning place - the Perinies (pardon spelling) as just amazing!

Hello Doe,
My great-grandfather's ancestors were form Normandy, France. And when we visited thiere while we lived at Toulouse, i also felt a stange "coming home" sensation, maybe there is more then just genes to who and what we are, eh?!

All the best to you both,
Shahnee

HI SHAHNEE AND DOE.
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN, I HAVE BEEN HERE A FEW YEARS NOW AND YES I SPEAK FRENCH BUT AS YOU SAY IT'S THAT "COMING HOME" FEELING. BETTER THAN THAT RAT RACE OF A PLACE THEY CALL ENGLAND.
HOPE TO STOP IN TOULOUSE ON ROUTE AND IF I CAN I WILL COME HOME VIA ANDORA BUT THE CARAVAN IS QUITE A SIZE AND ONLY A MID RANGE CAR SO I DONT KNOW. IF NOT I WILL DO ANDORA ANOTHER TIME.
NOW HAVE TO SORT OUT THE GARDEN COS IT WILL BE A JUNGLE BY THE TIME I GET BACK.

Hi ALIVEINFRANCE,

I do hope you will stop in Toulouse and yes - i know exactly what you mean about the size of your caravan/car versus the roads up to Andorra roads LOL!

I can remember we had a red French Citroen (right-hand drive) and on the way up the mountain to get to Andorra my mam was screaming her head off! You see, there are no barriers on the dead drop side of the road, (which also happened to be the passenger side - my dad was driving), and it is literally a sheer drop and only wide enough for the "slimmer" car! So everytime my mam looked out she got the fright of her life - as she is terrified on hieghts LOL! I shouldn't laugh - she was so upset that my dad had to pull up, (which was difficult as there is little space to do that!) and she had to climb in to the back, on his side! Then i had to climb in to the front passenger seat - which i didn't mind as i'm not bothered by hieghts!

Before we set off back to Toulouse my Mam was much calmer as she could only see the side of the mountain on the passenger side! LOL!

Arrrrrrr! Memories! LOL!

I'll let you get to your garden - but when you go, have a safe journey, won't you?

All the best,

Shahnee

Hello to all, I have left a few messages around this site tonight, basically i don't know where to begin.I am directly decended by Romany blood from the Ayres,Smith,Bowers,Pannell and Stanley families. My wife of 24 years is a traveller through and through, she is from the Black,Smith,Green,Ray,Isaacs,Mitchell,Rose families and is a cousin of the Barney and Frankham families to name but a few. I have suggested that if any of you can make it to our Romany and Traveller open day that i am organising at Selborne village hall in Hampshire on Saturday 11th October 2008 at 10.30am - 4.pm. We could swap information and see family photos and trees, all over a cup of tea.I am planning a few displays of Gypsy culture and a hop picking theme, some model Gypsy waggons and maybe if we'r lucky some kushti music and song and step dance at the end.All who can make it will be assured of a warm welcome,i am putting my gals to work serving the tea and coffee, and my eldest boy should be there with his lap-top handy with internet access.Should be a kushti day for all, kind regards,Kom ta bok ,kerry (aka Gypsy hawkins)

Hi Kerry,

We are a far distance from you all, but i think it's a great idea - will have to twist the hubby's arm! LOL!
Being as we are lazy folki, and have a sat nav, any possibility of the postcode? That way it will make things easier to find you.
I am really looking forward to it - tell me so you want any cakes or owt else bringing?

All the best to you and the family,
Shahnee
