I like watching the olimpics as well and I have found it even more entertaining that my husbands cousin is there boxing for England. Here's a peice from the news paper that I have copied. He has already out classed his first apponent and fights again tomorrow. We are all backing Billy not only to fetch back a medal onto English ground but also for being a possative role modle for the younger travelling boys as is Freddy Eastwood. Come on Billy!!!

Joker in the pack: Billy Joe Saunders is known for his sense of humour but will be fully focused on the task in hand in Beijing. Photo: PA
His father, Tom, his cousins, grandad, and great grandad all boxed.

Twelve months ago, Saunders was simply a precocious junior talent, with England amateur boxing officials having earmarked him as a potential gold medal favourite for the London Olympics in 2012. The teenager from a travelling family was making fine progress but appeared to pose little immediate threat to the long-time domestic light-welterweight number one Neil Perkins.

“We’d marked Billy Joe out as one of our major long-term prospects for London,” explained GB head coach Terry Edwards. “A year ago, Beijing wasn’t even on the agenda for him.”

However, Saunders could not be held back, sweeping to 37 successive victories, in so doing passing Perkins in the pecking order, which led to his selection for an Olympic qualifying tournament in Italy early this year - with a place at the Games at stake.

Victory in the bronze medal box-off against Pavol Hlavacka sealed the teenagers’ berth in Beijing within the strongest British boxing contingent for many years.

“Going to Beijing is going to be great but it’s not going to be a holiday,” said Saunders, who is real joker within the team. “I’m going to win a medal. If I fail to do that it will be a disappointment. But I believe in my ability to do it.”

Saunders has boxing in his blood, his travelling family steeped in the fistic trade. His great grandfather, Absolom Beeney, was a bare-knuckle champion of great repute, while his father also boxed. Saunders’ brother Tom is a professional fighter signed with promoter Frank Warren.

Saunders’ tender age, affable nature and background, are sure to draw the headlines and headline writers as the Olympic boxing tournament nears, yet it is his ability which should mark him out as one not to miss.

Beijing is a tough assignment for him, given his age, yet the young man is already convinced that he can produce not only great performances in Beijing, but change views on the community he is so proud of.

“I really hope this is going to prove to people that it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can still make it and go all the way. My whole community has been giving me great support and I want to go out there and bring something back for them.”

I agree! what an achievemt, whilst I am having a little braggy moment I am dieing to share with you's all that my own boy, age 10 was selected to fight for England in karatee at the beginning of the year. He had his first fight in may. Two fights and won them both the over all winners? England. Oh they fought against Scotaland by the way.

Well, Billy joe lost his fight this morning. I didn't see it as it was televised at 7 instead of 7.30. Due to the kids school holidays I am being a lazy one in the mornings. Any way I set my alarm for 7.15 and just got the results he'd lost. I am hoping he gets over his disapointment very quickly and rewards him self for the achievment thats already been made. Good on him I say.

Yes, I believe that the fella sent home was another traveller and also one of the Irish travellers is there. Not bad really out of 7 English fighters that went to bejing 3 are or have Romany,Traveller conections.

Well lets hope we still bring home the medles (note how I have copied the spelling of 'medle' see I thought it was spelt 'medal, lol - you learn something new every day.

Wonderful achievment for all the young men - and even if the lad lost that fight, the fact is he participated - and that in its self had earned him a medal in my book!!

What a sporting family you have - I bet you are well proud of your boy - congratulations to him on his achievement!

Says alot for the boxers, that 3 out of 7 have travelling connections, maybe its in the blood?!

Medal is spelt medle - no? Thought that was meddle - as in to mess in what you shoudn't - well, now i know, don't i?!

Oh I am confussed now so what is the correct spelling of medal, see I would rather know because when I post on u-tube against all the negative comments being made about billy boy i do like to know I have good spelling.
Yes, we are proud of our son and relatives. He's a good boy and over comes his problems (remember me telling you about them once Shahnee?) he wears his earing aids when he's fighting. To be honest I worry over it but i'll go along with what ever's best for him and what ever it is he wants to do. See, he's also a footballer and has been signed to Sutton United mini league for three years running. But I know deep down his passion is boxing so I am not sure what will happen in his futer, time will tell.

I agree, shame we have no medal coming back to England from Billy but hey! What an achievment. The boys done his self proud and best of luck to the rest of the British boxers. I think we are doing ok in the olimpics so far not bad at all. Goooooo England.

Hi all

well i can confirm most of the postings done by diff usernames backing her up was Risha herself, but along with her own username all the others i knew of that she also used have now been banned from this site

but to be honest i dont think she will ever be back here again, shes far too wrapped up in her new quest of being a Muslim fanatic, dordi iv even been sent stuff showing shes being called a terrorist too now.

anyway back to the subject Tilly medal is spelt medal lol

I'm with you on the who knows who bit - this internet can seem so personnel and yet it is so public, how can you really know anyone unless you get to know them away from cyber space?!

Arr! My kids - don't get me started! LOL! We are grandparents again, this time to a beautiful little girl!! And they are all doing well, thanks for asking.

How is your family?

All the best to you and yours,
Shahanee

Hi all

well i can confirm most of the postings done by diff usernames backing her up was Risha herself, but along with her own username all the others i knew of that she also used have now been banned from this site

but to be honest i dont think she will ever be back here again, shes far too wrapped up in her new quest of being a Muslim fanatic, dordi iv even been sent stuff showing shes being called a terrorist too now.

anyway back to the subject Tilly medal is spelt medal lol

Oprey Roma & kushti bok to all

Shaz
