I think i will be the only person from the surrounding villages who will go and introduce himself and welcome the new families to the community. I dont really know what to say or whether i really should go and impose on them. Just want to say hello and if i can help tidy up the land and make them welcome.
I thought the only way to say hello is make a pie or a pudding. Please can i have some advice on what to cook or make without making myself look nosy or imposing. Advice on whether i should go and say hello.

Hello there Sean, nice to hear from ya again, where ya been ? Did ya get the bit o work ya was lookin for. Ilooked Molesworth up on map an long time go i worked down in huntingdon, st neots and fenstanton, takes me back, they was good years and great craic.
As for you goin an introduce yourself to the new people who move onto that site, if thats what ya mean, well i,d say forget bout pies an puddins but just go over an say hello.
I would go over an there will mostly be kids playin about an i,d ask them who,s in charge an they would definate put you onto the right man (or woman )
Tell him (or her ) how ya got involved an voted for the site to go through an ya will see em watch ya very close an let them do the talkin an then just play it by ear. If they take to ya ,an i dont see no reason why not then you might make some good friends. Let us know how ya get on, all the best------kilby------ |

Hello Kilby, how have you been. Hope you have been keeping well. I did have a good run of work and i did very well at it too, sadly though i could not keep my mouth shut over certain issues and how things were being run, which lost me a lot of work. I feel pretty bad and a bit of a failure for letting my family down. I know money is not everything but its come at the wrong time to be losing a good earning wedge. I have a steady position in St.Ives at the moment so i should be grateful.
When was the last time you were down this way, i bet you would not reconise the place, a lot has changed.
Thankyou for the advice, i feel very nervous going onto the site as i dont want them to think i am being nosy or wanting to cause any trouble, but i also dont want to be tarred with the same brush and be thought of like the rest of the bigots in the village.

Hi Sean, its been over 30yrs since we lived down in Cambridge in place called Catherine st off mill road. There was 13 of us livin in that place an great craic we had, we,d catch the wagons by the Durham oxe pub an off anywhere the work took us, we was workin that time for firm called D&H pullin cables an such like an then we went off with JACKSONS doin river crossins an such.
Them firms probable dont exist no more but they did that time an great times they was.
Dont forget an let us know how ya get on if you visit the site an if the job you have is any cop at all then stick withit for a while coz things dont look too rosy just now as far as work goes.

For what it's worth - and maybe you have already gone avisiting - my mam, and i take after her, always took cake & cheese when she went visitng folks for the first time, and a couple of xmas ago i decieded to go a visiting some folk who only stop near us for xmas, I was a bit nervous when i first went on site, as i'm a house dwelling Rom and hadn't visited in a site in a very long time. Anyways, i just said hello and wished a good xmas handing over the gift of cake & cheese. The lady who took the gift eyed me up for a mo and then we just started chatting, and got on like a house on fire!
I think as long as your intentions and nature are good, the travellers will sense it, and once the intial suspscion and wariness, which is natural, is gone then you can build a conversation. Food is always good for that!
Hope what i said helps - perhaps alittle too late and you have already been? Sorry if that's the case, maybe it'll be of use the next time, eh?

I love history, i lose myself in finding out about the past, sometimes i wish i could go back in time and live a better life. I know life is what you make it but harder times bought people closer together, friendships actually mean't something. I am working with some people on a concrete plant and they are of a generation who knew what hard work was but had the craic at the same time. Maybe it is a different Jacksons but they are still going, i am sending a lot of concrete to them for the Guided bus route they are building between St.Ives and Cambridge. They also did some major pipe work around Molesworth and the surrounding villages about 10 year ago.
I have never been shy of doing hard work but it seems that most companies dont want you doing hard graft anymore due to health and safety. I once would happilly shovel all day long but now large companies say i cannot because i might hurt my back? or sue them? I guess you could say i have become lazy, the attitude they make you take is "just get a machine in"
I once knew a big man who would shovel 20mm stone into bags all day long, before it became mechanised. His job was to fill 50kg bags with sand and gravel which went to diy shops. You would not be allowed to do that in this day and age.
If i am honest, i struggle sometimes to do hard graft, not because i dont want to but because i am not allowed. I did some labouring a few weeks ago for a groundworker, he was 63 years of age and he walked all over me. He had the technic and has done it all his life, we shovel 18 cube of concrete in footpaths and slabs and i have never worked so hard. He would slap me on the back and say "keep up lad":D:D:D

Yup i know the school uniform run - did that Friday - for the three littlest - nightmare! LOL!
Havn't go much planned for week end except for house work - and i just seem to finish it when it needs doing again! LOL!
