Hello all! I'm trying to find any information on my Great Grandmother Priscilla Amer, who i believe was a Gypsy, the information i do have is as follows.......she married my Great Grandfather Arthur Connor in Uxbridge in 1910, from the marriage certificate i can see her Father was Zachariah Amer, a hawker(deceased), Arthur and Priscilla appear on the 1911 census in Northolt, Middlesex, Priscilla lists her place of birth as Ditton, Surrey abt 1887, i've not been able to find a record of the birth though, i did find entries for a Hezekiah Amer 1879 in Guildford, Surrey and a Zachariah Amer 1883 in Epsom, Surrey. On the 1901 Census in Northolt, Middlesex, 2 families appear called 'Amers' they are also listed as Gypsies on the census, one family is of 3 which only the head name appears William Amers b1879 along with 'wife' Amers 20 and 'daughter' Amers 11 months, the other family in the same with only the heads full name appearing, Thomas Amers b 1839, a wife born 1859 and five daughters 14, 12, 5, 3 and 4 months and a son of 2. In the 1911 census Hezekiar Amer appears again, living in a caravan in Woodlands Road, Southall, his occupation is "HANKERS PEGGS BRGAS"(not a typo, copied and pasted from the census) he also has a wife Ocean Amer now too, and a son and daughter named after their parents, in the 1901 census William Amers also gives his occupation as a "hawker of clother pegs".................and that is about all the information i have, and given that, what advice could anyone give me on how to attempt to trace this family?? Many Thanks, Wayne. |

| Hello Wayne, I have recently discovered that Zachariah was my great grandfather. My grandfather was his son Benjamin, brother to Priscilla. My sister and I are currently doing the family tree and discovering family members that we never knew existed. We think Jane may still be alive as we cannot find a death certificate for her. Zachariah died in a fatal fairground accident in 1902 but cannot find any report as yet. Many of the family settled in the Southall, Middlesex area and many of them are buried in Hillingdon cemetery. |
