“Babies are dropped several stories for good health and good luck at a shrine in Solapur, in Maharastra, India.” April, 2008.
They drop babies off a fifty foot building…for luck…and good health.

What is the rational here: You do something so brutally unthinkable off the bat, that things are bound, statistical speaking, to improve for the child? Or perhaps the inevitable brain damage they suffer gives them a sunny disposition…that could be mistaken for life long happiness. Or, more likely, the process (and the concrete) simply weeds out unlucky children from their more fortunate brethren.

Im shocked!! cant believe the mothers would allow it but then I guess in their culture they dont have much choice !
Poor babies just imagine if they lkanded with their neck bent or arm tucked behind them ?I mean at that height they must hit the pad at about 30 miles a hour! and we get a fine for no seat belt!!the mind boggles! And what about their brain? I mean you read in the papers where the dad has shaken the baby and it resulted in brain damage?

It looks kinda scarey doesn't it, but it dont look like they came to any harm. There was another country, cant think of where it was, they used to test a new borns grip by literaly hanging them from a washing line, if they clung on they were seen as fit and strong, but if they didn't grip and fell then they were known as weeklings and treated that way through life.

Its definitely something I wouldn't do. But they say they have never had any injuries and that it helps the children grow up big and strong. Whether I believe that or not is a different matter. Its a Muslim tradition as opposed to an Indian one. http://www.boingboing.net/2008/05/01/baby-drop-ritual.html
