| The term GRT's has started to be used as a general term for Gypsies Roma & Travellers by government policy makers and it has been reported that
''I have just received a copy of an anti racism school pack and throughout it
the term GRT is used giving a clear lead to those teachers, pupils and
others that it is OK to describe people as " GRT's ". Last year a senior
official from the DCFS came down to Kent to meet a group of young Gypsies
who had made a film, a day later he wrote to say how much he had enjoyed
meeting the " GRT's ".
Do you think it is acceptable?

Well as so many of the Gypsies have different oppinions on what they like being called isent it a reasonable term compared to Pikey? which you seem to think is ok as long as its a Gypsy doing the calling ? abit like Rosie said about a Black person using the N word? Some travellers like traveller some like Romany and some like Gypsy so GRT is only a used I expect to cover all 3 and so as not to offend anyone as we are so PC correct in this Country now people are scared of their own shadow when it comes to being accused of racism its just getting ridiculous nit-picking at a perfectly acceptable term ? I just thought it was an abreviation of Gypsy/Romany/Travellers but you must have seen it differently ? How are non Gypsies meant to know who is who and what they prefer ? Rosie likes needies others dont? English dont like the Irish being called Romany or Gypsies and yet they have ethnic status the same so i think its all getting rather silly now either the Gypsies should decide what they would like to be called as in One name and then people would know what to use instead of all the different terms that some like or dislike? Why not get the appropiate organisation to conduct a survey ? But then of course you also have some that do not admit to being from a Romany background so not sure how one would go about it? |

if all travellers get the same name will all people of the same colour no matter what there culture is be called the same and would that be acceptable to them. eg the n word for all blacks, the p work for anyonewhos not chinese and then theres the chinese what are we going to call them as they are asian but not P's and they aren't white but then they could't be in the same class as the n's. it all so confusing..................why oh why do they not just call them all what they are...? |

| I think the term used was for the purposes of the Law as in how to determine who was termed "Gypsy" for the purpose of applying law etc when it comes to Illegal camping etc as the authorities had to have a guide line and as there were so many different groups it was decided(for the law purpose"that anyone who was "of no fixed abode" and travelling in caravans and stopping on different places etc) The Ethnicity was not included as I assume that so many from different origins and even the English make points on different groups with in this Country alone .also of course many Romany dont travel at all and so I can understand the difficulties when trying to enforce certain laws ,I read an interesting article about this and how or rather what led up to the laws that defined the word Gypsy for the purposes of the law and it seemed it was triggered by a Gypsy who would not pay a fine for illegal camping and said to the authorities prove I'm a gypsy ? Its quite a long article and thought it may help others to understand the situation more I will try and find the link o the article mentioned. |
