Gypsies afraid over violent 'gang attacksReports of violent gang attacks are spreading fear in some of Britain's traveller communities.
They include claims of groups of around 20 Polish and Irish
men, all armed, attacking travellers, as well as stories of children
being abducted and held hostage in return for money and jewellery.
While filming a group of Roma gypsies for a documentary, BBC
Two's Revealed Extra I had rare access to young people living in the
communities. The police are warning travellers to be vigilant, but say so far
they've received no evidence to support any of the claims, and nobody
has come forward to report any crimes.
The Gypsy Council said it was aware of the rumours, but hadn't heard of anything first-hand.
It wants travellers who have been attacked to come forward.
However, Pea told Revealed Extra that contacting the authorities wasn't the done thing in their communities.
"It's going to be over pretty soon," he said.
"They're going to walk into the wrong camp. I think they're
going to sort it out their own way... whatever that is I don't know."
Revealed Extra: My Gypsy Life is on BBC2, Saturday 4th September, 14:00.
Stephen Otter, Chief Constable of Devon & Cornwall Police says:
"Devon and Cornwall Police are aware of incidents involving members
of the Gypsy and Traveller Community nationally and our response to this
is Operation LAKOTA. Reports in some cases allege the use of extreme
violence."
"...We understand this can be
unsettling and frightening for those who may have family elsewhere in
the country at this time. It is important for me to tell you that to
date, Devon and Cornwall Police has not received any confirmed reports
or incidents of this nature."
"I have asked my officers to
deliver you this message to reassure you that Devon and Cornwall remains
one of the safest places in the country and I’m committed to continue
making people feel safe in their communities."
"If you or a
member of your community are concerned or have information that may help
bring the individuals responsible to justice, can I ask that you
contact us."

Thousands of people have attended rallies in
Paris and 130 other French towns to protest at the government's policy
of deporting Roma people.
Police say turnout across France was slightly more than 77,000 while organisers put the figure nearer 100,000.
With polls suggesting at least 65% of French people back the policy, the government played down the protests.
The EU parliament is to debate the Roma situation in Europe next week.

| I am always happy to hear that when my people the Roma/gypsies, are being expelled from some counrties, like France today for instanse my people gather in the thousands to protest, this indicates, that my people are begining to show the world that enough is enough, we have been bulleed through out these centuries, and are still being brutalized in some countries, this hate for the Gypsies I thought it was coming to an end, but how wrong I was, when will these people who practice discrimination, will realize that most of our people are not what they think we are. most of us have come a long way from ignorence, no doubt it, there are some bad apples, and besides what country in this world does not have these bad apples, the diffrence is that almost all the European countries hate us, because their fore fathers and mothers have told thier children to hate us, and put fear in their hearts, and this fame of bad Roma/Gypsies, is untill today valid, |

Sarkozy hits back at criticism on Gypsies
President Nicolas Sarkozy's office fired back Wednesday at European
Commission criticism of France's crackdown on Gypsies, or Roma, saying
some of the complaints are unacceptable.
A day earlier, EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding had called
France's expulsions of Roma to Eastern Europe "a disgrace" - as well as
something she "thought that Europe would not have to witness again after
the second World War."
The exchange heightened tensions between France and the European Union a
day before a summit of EU leaders Thursday in Brussels, and forced the
European Commission president to go into damage control, saying Reding
had not meant to compare World War II and today.
French authorities have recently dismantled more than 100 illegal camps
and sent home more than 1,000 Roma, mainly back to Romania, in a
crackdown that has drawn international condemnation. Sarkozy has called
Roma camps sources of crime such as illegal trafficking and child
exploitation. France could ultimately be slapped with a fine by
the European Court of Justice if its expulsions are found to have
breached EU law.
A senior official at the presidential palace said France doesn't want an
argument with the commission, but "some of the comments are simply
unacceptable." He declined to be named, in line with office policy.
After a Cabinet meeting, government spokesman Luc Chatel also objected
to Reding's remarks, saying, "It is unacceptable to compare the
situation today with a tragic period in our history."
The French government has objected to any comparisons between its plane
flights of Gypsies - many of whom return home voluntarily with a small
stipend - and World War II, when Europe's Gypsy populations were
decimated in the Holocaust.
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon is to "defend the position of
France" on the expulsions Wednesday evening in Brussels before heads of
government, parties and lawmakers of the right-wing Popular European
Party, his office said. The announcement turned the planned trip to
Brussels ahead of Thursday's EU summit into a rescue mission.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he had offered
Reding his full support. But he added that "expressions used in the heat
of the moment may have given rise to misunderstandings."
Reding "did not want to establish any parallels between what happened in World War II and the present," he said.
Steffen Seibert, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, also
weighed in, saying Reding "is perfectly entitled, as she did yesterday,
to comment."
But "such comments certainly are sometimes more useful when they are more moderate in tone," Seibert said.
Yet another European leader, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, said the
subject of Roma should be added to the summit agenda "to find a common
position."
Reding "should have treated the issue in private before speaking
publicly as she did," Berlusconi said in an interview in Thursday's
French daily Le Figaro.
"This problem of the Roma is not specifically French," he said. "It concerns all European nations."
Meanwhile, in an act of solidarity with the Roma, an umbrella group of
black associations in France, CRAN, said it would file a complaint
against the Interior Ministry for "inciting racial hatred."
The complaint is based on an Interior Ministry letter sent this summer
to regional officials and telling them that Roma camps were the priority
in a nationwide sweep to dismantle illegal squatters' quarters.
The blunt letter, made public last week, shocked many people in France,
where officials are supposed to be blind to race, religion and
ethnicity. Speaking on RTL radio Wednesday, Pierre Lellouche, France's
European affairs minister, acknowledged the letter "shouldn't have been
written like that."
Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux's office said he had issued a new
letter on the subject to the regional officials Monday - one that did
not include any reference to Roma.
Roma face discrimination in housing, jobs and education across Europe.
As EU citizens, they have a right to travel to France, but must get
papers to work or live there in the long term.
As many as 15,000 Roma live in France, according to the advocacy group Romeurope. French authorities have no official estimate.

Will we the Gypsy/Roma, have peace from these countries who practice discrimination, one day? why again the racismo is on the rise? not only us the Roma but other ethnic people are being discriminated, why the international community come to a comclusion, and make a law not to discriminate anyone, Yes but I almost forgot, that we have a law which I have mentioned above, the trouble is that this law is not obeyed by certain EU countries, and any one knows is,not to obey the law, is a crime! so these countries are commiting a crime! in the eyes of the international community! mr. Sarkozy and Berlusconi, should be asked by the worlds justice organisation, why did they broke the international law, they must answer this question, and also the real reason bihind all this mess! victor |

Has anybody noticed that every time these countries that discriminate Gypsies, after what ever they have done to us, get punished by their own people ! well I did! for instance Sarkozy of France he is passing through a very delicate piriod, I beleive that not only him but also Berlusconi and others who discriminate, our Gypsies, who have no human hearts, who brutalize us and also expell us from one country to another whether we like it or not shall have some sort of punishment from thier own people, and shall suffer the consiquences, because there is a God that watches over all us, not only Gypsies, but also other countries athnic people, these people forget that we are also God's children, so let it be a lesson for Zarkozy and Berlusconi etc, etc, Victor. |

Gypsies and Irish Travellers As
a distinct ethnic group with specific needs, for the first time in
2011, Gypsies and Irish Travellers will be able to tick a separate box
in answer to the proposed question 'what is your ethnic group?'.
We need the Gypsy and Irish Traveller community to play an active
part in getting accurate statistics that will help to maintain the
community's lifestyle and ensure access to public services. Population
statistics from the census will help to: - Understand the size and nature of the Gypsy and Irish Traveller community in England and Wales
- Plan services that are more in tune with the needs of Gypsies and Irish Travellers
- Monitor the allocation of local area resources to make sure all groups are treated equally and fairly
- Create a fantastic new resource for Gypsy and Irish Traveller family historians to explore in 100 years time
So please encourage family, friends and others in the community to take part in the 2011 Census.
We have provided the following publicity materials for you to download,
encouraging people in your community to take part, and explaining how
to get more help and advice.
24 September 2010
The census in England and Wales is run by the Office for National Statistics

David Essex has done more than most to improve the public’s perception of gypsies. He has won over hearts and minds as a romantic Romany
charmer of a pop star and in his official role as Patron of the Gypsy
Council. Nevertheless the UK’s popular press persists in portraying the
gypsy, Roma and traveller communities as feckless felons out to steal
the land from under our feet. David’s Rock On remains one of the greatest and strangest debut 45s of all time. It catapulted David into the pop stratosphere where he would remain. Hot on the heels of his appearances in the stage musical Godspell and the film That’ll Be The Day, Rock On
was the perfect introduction to a unique talent. The pop audience
instantly took to David’s disarming, cheeky Cockney persona, and his
thinking tinker Jack-The-Lad gypsy charm. But what still gets lost is
the sheer oddness and invention of his hits, even though in the ‘90s he
was celebrated by a number of pop acts like Saint Etienne, Denim, Happy
Mondays and Massive Attack. On the first few David Essex
LPs his teenybopper audience will have heard some curious cuts, which
were a right old mix of Caribbean, Latin, Gospel , Music Hall, and the
good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll that saved his East End soul. It helped having
seasoned session men on board like Chris Spedding, the guitarist whose
remarkable story spans free jazz, John Cale, Linda Lewis and The
Wombles, via The Vibrators who appeared on TV with him when he performed
his Mickie Most-produced hit Motorbikin’ . Spedding also produced the Pistols’ first demos. The title track of David’s third LP, All the Fun Of The Fair,
captures something of the enduring, strange fascination with
fairgrounds which is that mix of bright lights and fun rides mingled
with the greasy glamour of impending violence. Fairground folk, the
travelling showmen, fortune tellers, and bare-knuckle fighters are among
the clichés of gypsy culture in the UK, though quite what proportion of
people involved with fairgrounds today are from a Roma background is
very much open to debate. Among the people who have helped gypsies in the UK find a voice was the writer, film maker and social campaigner Jeremy Sandford. He is remembered most for Cathy Come Home and Edna, The Inebriate Woman, but among his other works was Gypsies.
Published in 1973 this was an attempt to allow gypsies to explain
themselves to the wider world. It was updated and reprinted as Rokkering To The Gorjios in 2000 at the same time Sandford released a film, Spirit Of The Gypsies, celebrating the music and lifestyle of gypsies in the UK. David Essex and his (Pavee) mother featured in the film, and David
is quoted as saying: “My mother taught me always to be proud and never
to deny that you are a Gypsy. Gypsies are free range people and Gypsy
songs are songs of the open road, of wandering and of liberty. A land
without Gypsies is a land without freedom!”

A bride on 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings' has to have a fire extinguisher on stand-by during her ceremony in case her dress explodes. Skip related content
Non-traveller Sam, 17, is set to tie the knot
with 20-year-old gypsy Patrick and she is so determined to make sure
she is accepted by his friends and family, she orders a 196lbs dress,
which is fitted with fairy lights and robotic butterflies that flap
their wings. The dress - which was made by Thelma in her shop in
Liverpool - has so many electric wires hidden inside that Thelma is
terrified it could catch alight. She says of the pink gown: "We're
relieved that all the lights work but I am still worried about the fire
issue so we've decided we will take a little fire extinguisher with us
just in case. All that combustion, it could just go up in flames." Sam arrives at the church in a Cinderella-style carriage - similar to the one Katie Price used when she married Peter Andre
in 2005 - and the wedding is a huge event for the travellers because
they don't like allowing non-travellers, known as "gorgers", into their
community. Patrick's cousin Elycia says of gorgers: "They've got no respect for whoever's around them or nothing." 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings' is on Channel 4 on Tuesday (25.01.11) at 9pm. (C) BANG Media International |

| As I pridicted, that Berlusconi of Italy shall go to the justice court to explain his involment with a 17 years old girl, yes this is a crime, but which crime is worse for brutalizing our Gypsies, in his country, or this actual crime which he will have to go to the justice, I say that as the Bible says, that human flesh is weak , it was and always will be, but the Italian government did not persicute him about our Gypsy promblem, so you can see how the Italian government, sees were justice should be applied, and were not, this proves that they have embraced Discrimination like the Nazi's did and would not let go. Now why would the travelars would not allow other non travelars Gypsies to attent the wedding ? I would very much like to know, as I said once that some times the discriminated also discriminate, on the contrary if other Gypsies would attent, then the wedding would have a good propaganda to other Gypsies, and it would have been commented amongst by the Gypsies for a long time, and these travelars Gypsies, not as a whole should think twice before the say that other Gypsies were not allowed to attend.

| Thank you very much Mr. Moderater, for giving me the explenation, of that wedding, I did not know that the Irish travelers, are so different, from our Romani/Gypsy travelars, I think that these travelars who claim to be Gypsies but are actualy not, have adobted our way of life, through out these centuries, now that they know how to live while traveling, let them live in peace, they are also our people, that is English,
Victor. |
