Hello I hope its ok to start a new post here, but I am just wondering if anyone knows if the paintings on narrowbaots, vardo's and even the fairground and circus designs are connected in any way coz they seem very similar in many ways? Thank you and all the best  |

| Hi Flyam, do you know if Gypsies also used canal boats or are canal boat people different to Gypsies? The reason I ask is because I'm tracing my husbands family tree and we were hoping that he is related to the Coopers. My husbands family used to travel around a lot and the family were born all over the place. I have just found out that my Husbands GG Grandfather worked the canals which could be why his children were born all over the place. Kushti Bok! Sheri |

| Don't know how many romas there are afloat, But the traditional (not those hot pink ones........) painting on a canal boat is baised on romani designs! Live afloaters, (not your stag party....driving to fast down canals.....makin me spill me tea....grrr.......) Prise a watering can with romani painting on very highly! I can see Roma, Travlers, gypsys taking to the water soon, If they havent already as a substitute for the road, as its much easyer to live and travel. Much more "acceptable" too. You can either Continuouse cruse, wich means you move neigbour hood every 14 days max, or you can have a moring, for a month or two or a year or two then move on :D you can go from kent to york pretty much! Unfortunatly you cant go any more north on your boat unless you get it toed by road to the Glasgow Edinburgh rout :( Some of me family live afloat, and me mushs family are in to it too, thou just lots of holiday trips. He even works making them :). |

Ronnie Wood of rolling stones fame is of Rrom stock and was brought up travelling in canal boats.
not many people know that.

| i have heard of narrow boat gypsies .as a grai could pull a vardo and a narrow boat im sure there must ave been some in boats .as ive heard of a term water gipsys..cant be hundred percent sure but it would have been possible but more likely victorian and pre era.who knows hey.i have coopers in my lot but they were a bit further back. |

| We lived on a narrowboat in the 1980's, and there were people called water gypsies on the canals. We moved on to the boat because we had a lot of trouble in the New Forest in our Vardo. I expect there will be more gypsies living on the canals in the future because the roads are not so safe, and gaujos can be unpleasant. With a motor you can get to towns for work more easily, and moor up. We used to meet up with the Showmen in Nottingham and Loughborough, and go busking in town. We went right into Birmingham centre in the boat, busked for a day, and left in the evening. You also don't get the police at you. I painted roses and castles on enamelware and sold them at the locks. Good days. |

| helo every one,i am very interested in the canal boats, my uncle married a bargee who years ago worked the grandunion cannal then settled in harefield middlsex my aunties name was nellie cooper , is scooped 01 still a member i see she was looking for info on coopers might be able to help, good luck to all setaside |

The painting of narrow boats and water cans etc was known as *Van-Dykin* and i do know that a very popular family name of the canals in the days was a family name of *Skinner* who were well known *Bargi people* (a name often used when refering to such ppl) this family never really strayed from living on or near canals, I do recall a scrap yard that worked from the side of the Leeds Liverpool canal at Armley Leeds which was owned by Jeff Skinner. The art work as i said earlier was known as *Van-Dykin* and the style of rose often depicted the where abouts of where the painting was done giving other Bargi ppl an indication as to where a particular boat was from, this been confirmed (obviously ) by the named sign on each side.
They is however 1 good message spoken in this study to all Roms and travellers alike and that message is... no one truly knows in detail about the ppl of the canals, the memories and culture is fast dying out (which is very sad) Let us Hope that the Rom cultures and ways of life does never die alongside it. That to me would be a huge injustice as i have always felt that the Romany Gypsie as been a huge part of Britain and building britain as to what it is today (emmm have to rethink about how britain is today) the Romany as been here and roamed the roads of britain since way way back, i'm sure the Gypsie as roamed for as long as the fox, and England is brilliant at waiting until they have lost something before they realise when it's too late to start restoring 'keep it up Gordon Boswell is all i can say'.
emm i stop cos i gone off the subject.
anyways The name 'Skinner' does that help in anyway? |

| Last one, you cant really see very well on these pics but u can get the idea, i have more of the unders etc and ones of the whole wagon from a distance but the photos need to be seen in full size really. Anyone got a wagon for me to paint???!!! |

| Well, talk about "paint your wagon", friend o mine called Brian Crouch used to do same sort scroll work an such on all diffrent types o livin wagons but sad to say he died earlier this year. Anyways its nice to see as your keepin the art alive. All the best Lisa, to you an yours ------kilby------ |
