Hi, just joined this forum ).  Wondered if anyone has any links with the following families:

PANNELL, NEWLAND, PROUDLEY

My great-grandmother was Jane Pannell, her parents, James Pannell and Fanny (Frances) Newland: James was born in Horsham, Surrey, and Fanny in Ewhurst, Sussex, both around 1840 (WE THINK!).  On some of their childrens' birth certificates, Fanny gives her maiden name as Newland, Proudley, and on one, as 'Gollather'.  James Pannell was a hawker and basketmaker.  The family travelled around Surrey, Sussex and Kent (where they would work as hop pickers) and their children were born across these counties.

When Jane Pannell married my g-grandfather (who was in the navy/coastguard), the Romany link seemed to disappear, and I think the family hoped to hide these roots.

Would be great if anyone had any links or info on this family.

Many thanks

Clara

I've realised that my link with my Romany forebears is fairly distant - I reckon that I'm an eighth Romany (ie both great-grandparents on y mother's side were travellers).

It would be great to think that I could find some distant Pannell/Newland/Proudley cousins, or whatever, but I've got quite a few memories from our family which I will post in the next week or so - mainly about my Pannell great-grandfather.

Best wishes to all

Clara
